It seems every time I get one of their movies from Amazon, it's always comes damaged because Criterion or the people who they've hired failed to put the product together right.

It's absurd for them to even pull this type of crap. When Arrow, Shout!, Vinegar Syndrome, just to name a few, charges nothing to replace their damaged products, including shipping.

The only way I'll ever purchase one of their movies again is if can exam the product beforehand. Which will of course be next to never since they no longer sell their movies at Target or the alike. The Barnes & Noble, that I used to go to no longer has the Red Lobster, in its shopping center. And, the only other store is way the f**k out of the way and has nothing anywhere within the vicinity worthy of me traveling out there.
Can you elaborate on this. What are they charging $5 for? From what I understand they have definitely provided free replacements for their discs in the psat.

Sorry, I did not mean to get personal. I've just had a lifetime full of Popeye people who claim by saying I YAM WHAT I YAM AND THAT'S ALL I YAM in order to defend terrible aspects of their personalities and all the repercussions therein.

But yeah, we're just talking here, Tro, I did not mean to personally offend you as we've always gotten along pretty well in discussions on the forum. No reason to change that!

I was wondering the same thing! I've gotten free replacement cases and artwork from them too in the past, even though at first they said they had to charge me $5.00 for them. I've never had any trouble with Criterion customer service and found them to be reliable and efficient.

Thank you. There's the rub. I like what we are, including our "terrible aspects". No virtue signalling here. Can't trust it. Of course the irony is I'm pretty much like you as far as tastes go. I like being stretched.

By the way a bunch of online friends I have took to calling me Tro. You picked up on that

Okay, so not a disc issue. Outside of any inherent flaws with the packaging/design (like the first All About Eve release), there's really no reason why Criterion should offer unlimited free packaging replacements for anyone that wants it, especially if they didn't even order directly from Criterion. Can you provide photos here of what was damaged with the packaging? Also, why didn't you return it to Amazon?

For Amazon, I pointed that out earlier:
Quote:
Amazon doesn't help either with their policies either. Can't return/exchange products after 30 days. Yet, it takes them over 30 days to send out Criterion titles for whatever F'd-up reason. And, I have Prime, what the F. It should only take 2 days max.

Your Amazon point doesn't make any sense. The start of the return period is when the product is delivered to you, not the day you order it..So you had 30 days from the day it arrived to return it.

Also, am I looking at that photo correctly, or are you seriously trying to get a replacement because of a microscopic rip at the top of the spine? If so, it's incredible Criterion even responded.

Well, that's reason why I have two copies from Amazon. When the first couldn't be exchanged because it was a gift and didn't come with a gift receipt. Despite that my sister did request one (that isn't the first time Amazon's failed to provide a physical receipt too.) But, the person on the phone suggested to just order another and return that in its place. Fast forward about two months later. Amazon won't exchange or replace that one. And it's unopened.

The fact when it comes to the damages is it's clearly Criterions fault. This isn't damage from some retard at Amazon who doesn't know how to properly package an item. Plus, it's over $20. In fact in the case of this title over $40. Which in my book qualifies for a return if this type damage is found. If costed under $20, then I would say it's not worth it. Cheap price, cheap quality. It's the principle fact that the damage was created on Criterion end. Plus, it cover, not like their mailing out a complete unit. Plus, it also just makes them look compared Shout!, Arrow, and Vinegar Syndrome. Who are of course top notch at righting their wrongs free of charge (dent/slashed steelbooks, smashed cases, covers damaged the same this is, covers that were oddly-removing some of the writing, and etc.).

Imagine going through all this because of the tiniest nick on the cover. I could understand if the case was completely crushed, or even a large tear, or a disc was scratched and/or unplayable, but for the "damage" here, this is ridiculous. Enjoy wasting more time dealing with this non-issue instead of enjoying the actual 4K disc, I guess.

It's not nonsense when you have to look at every day in your shelve sticking out like a sore thumb. Plus, when it's one of your favorite directors and would like to give them the proper respect they deserve.

I've spent about three minutes looking at that photo and I can't even see where the alleged damage is?

I don't have great eyesight, but near as I can figure it, he's referring to this:

Is it unlikely Knife in the Water getting an upgrade any time soon? I know people have said Criterion don’t want release any Polanski anymore, but I’m guessing that’s just speculation?

I’ve almost bought it in a few flash sales but always think I’ll get burned and they’ll upgrade

The only damage is the paper cover. I own a handful of Criterions that have this issue (I think most of them were from ordering on Amazon) but I am not disturbed enough to call it quits.

And with customer service, I love the way they handle it and would say its one of the best in the business.

Speaking of customer service experiences, I found out that the Blood and Black Lace Arte 4K Edition from Arrow Video went OOP and they had to cancel a bunch of orders. Now that I would be more upset about but to have the paper cover slightly ripped on the corner would be the least of my worries.

Also, if you're ordering from Amazon you can definitely expect some kind of crease or minor damage (Something that I honestly don't care about). My Universal Monsters 4K Sets just arrived right now and they have creases on the outer boxes because they were stacked on top of each other in a tight paper package. With all the damages and reservations, I would still say I'm very glad to be able to own these stuff and watch them. Everyone has very different reactions to these kinds of situations, but I honestly wouldn't be too bothered by it.

What the Criterion Collection does is always unpredictable. There's always a chance, but it may depend on when they want to do it and their priorities. Everything regarding the behind the scenes, their intentions, and their priorities to release are all going to be speculation from the fans and customers.

I've heard some users mention about the Polanski thing though but I don't know if this is true or not. With that said, their last Polanski release was in 2014 with Tess and Macbeth. Knife in the Water, if I recall correctly, already has a restoration out so it's possible for Criterion to do it. As of matter of whether or not it's worth buying, I'd say why not at this point.

I bought the dvd a few sales ago hoping that it might jumpstart the upgrade but so far nothing. That order also included DVDs of A Canterbury Tale and Trouble in Paradise with the same results. Criterion hasn’t completely abandoned upgrading their dvd library but it seems upgrading BDs to 4K is their priority now.
