I did wonder as on the last page Joe called it native 3D but I'd always thought it was a conversion. Terrible movie but the 3D and fx provide a nice distraction.

Ah, right, I didn't see Joe's comment. Maybe some of the CG was native? But I must admit I really didn't think it looked like it. I do think that old Joe is maybe the nicest and most positive chap who posts on this forum, and I suspect he might have more 3D Blu-rays in his collection than possibly anyone else.

I see Joe thought the 3D in the film was excellent: I always apply a "Joe Factor", that's to say I think he sees 3D in a much more enthusiastic way than I do. So, whilst I almost always agree with him very generally, I do tend to mark his verdict down several notches in order to match it with my own opinion across the board..! Nothing but respect and affection for Joe ...but I would not describe I Frankenstein as having excellent 3D - or as being a very (or even remotely) underrated film! As you say though, the 3D and effects (and the actress whose name I can't remember) all make for plenty of nice views.

Exactly; and long may he continue to do so..!

With old Storm Ciarán gearing up to unleash his worst on us, I was about to put on Finest Hours; it's a film I really like, with nice 3D.

Hi guys, I love you all too. Going to see where I saw that I Frankenstein was filmed natively, since it was only thr other day that I read it.

Found this posted on Amazon which was the cause of my error:

"I was PLEASANTLY surprised all the way around! Fresh slant on the story, creative script and writing, very cool character development, yet staying true to the basic plot. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would! Also, another fine film actually shot in 3D, not just 3D'd in post. (Makes such a difference!)"

Should have continued researching technical information for verification instead of jumping to a conclusion. Have now read a few articles citing post conversion and this from cinemablend back in 2014 perhaps explains why I didn't:

"I was actually shocked to learn I, Frankenstein is a post-converted 3D feature because the 3D doesn't feel like an afterthought. Principal photography began in February of 2012, wrapping after ten weeks. A release was set for February 2013, but later was bumped when Lionsgate announced plans to make it a 3D release. And clearly the two-year delay on its release was well-used. Thanks to much of the film being reliant on green screen effects and CGI monsters and battle sequences, it doesn't look like that barely-there post-converted 3D. Though not shot with 3D in mind, the cinematography doesn't fight the device. So overall, it's getting a high score here, despite not being eyed for 3D from the start."

Hope this doesn't tarnish my reputation any.....

Watched Finest Hours. Great movie with some good 3D, the darkness of the whole movie didn’t do it any favors. The soundtrack is fully immersive 3D, waves crashing all around and above, upmixed to neural-X. The movie was expensive, had to wait for 3 months from Brazil and it was well worth it. If you can find it , do not hesitate. Nice recommendation, Will…I mean Sam.

I liked, but didn’t love I, Frankenstein. Gave it a 3.5 out of 5 after viewing. I’m one of the few that doesn’t care if a contemporary film was shot native or converted in post. (I’m not talking about native Golden and Silver age films, which are superior to everything, or autoconversions, which are universally awful.) If a studio is working in cooperation with the conversion team, it will have all the raw chromakeyed footage, background and environment renders, even interiors, etc. - all the pieces needed to construct both eye views with total control over alignment and interaxial. In some ways it’s better, in the sense that everything can be adjusted after shooting, unlike footage from a 3D rig. The problem is that conversion teams take their lead from directors who are often not 3D fans and begrudgingly call for mild use of positive and negative interaxial (weak 3D, no popouts). But when it comes to outdoor location shoots, which are getting more and more rare, nothing beats strong native. But so much of what appear to be exotic location shots anymore is composite post production.
