I remember when first official trailer (not teaser) for Avatar 2 dropped on youtube in heavily compressed 1080p people in comments were complaining that CGI looks worse than in first Avatar

Of course people are going to judge. Don't upload a trailer to Youtube in 1080p which everyone knows they completely trash with their miserable encoding if you don't want people to judge by what they see. Post the trailer in 4k, which Youtuibe doesn't compress quite so badly.

Of course people are going to judge based on what they see. What else are they going to go by? So there's a pro-res trailer somebody posted a link to. Great, but that's almost 2gb. Some people do have bandwidth limits and don't want to download a 2GB trailer.

1. Lindsay’s delivery of “it says Virgil Brigman back on the air” is perfect in the theatrical, and I hate that they changed it in the SE.

2. I prefer the reveal of the sky after the NTI chamber in the theatrical. It had been so long since you had SEEN sky in that version of the film that it was jarring and made the triumphant music more appropriate. Adding in the wave sequence kind of ruined the big moment of seeing sky again.

Otherwise, Special Edition for me all the way.
I honestly found the special edition far too bloated, when I sat through it, it was a major chore for me

I think the soviet union subplot feels shoehorned in and I didn't like the way the message was spelled out for everyone at the end, also the CGI for the gigantic waves didn't age all too well

Not to say everything in the special edition is bad, I really liked the extra character moments

I may give the special edition another chance someday, but as of now the theatrical cut is the only one I watch

True, it's just that the second shot's teal tint is much worse, it's the whole sky and water, it's almost the whole shot being bathed in teal. The teal in the first shot is far more obvious in his face, while the water still looks fine enough.

I just hope the teal tint will be more sporadic in the UHD, and not as strong as in the YT video.

What’s funny is, I used to feel the same way about the USSR subplot. Interestingly (and I guess sadly), that aspect of the SE is a lot more relevant today than it was when the SE was originally released. I think the film’s “message” is as well.

And while I do somewhat agree with the message being a bit too heavy-handed, I do prefer it to NO message or meaning to the NTI contact like in the TC.

Interesting post about The Abyss transfer. Source linked below, from the True Lies 4K thread.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=543

Here's an excerpt of the comment by u/LawrenceBrolivier on the post from yesterday about upcoming Cameron 4K's in the r/movies subreddit

Quote:
Win some - lose some:

WIN: The Abyss is finally re-scanned and presented in hi-def, in a way you can purchase and own, for the first time since they scanned the Special Edition for a LASERDISC TRANSFER.

LOSE: This hi-def presentation has been DNR'd. It's not as bad as the original T2 4k release, thankfully. But people definitely have a faint sheen of waxiness to them, and there is some noise-reduction artifacting visible

WIN: The detail on The Abyss is greatly increased! You can see wrinkles on faces, shimmer in eyes, rust on bolts, all that, and objects in the shadows are a little more clear as well.

LOSE: The film has been color graded to look very cyan/green instead of blue/white. The contrast level overall is flattened out, and the picture in general is just a smidge dimmer.

Some examples:

https://imgur.com/a/j7T8t1z

Overall, this is absolutely an improvement (and the soundtrack alone is going to be a massive upgrade, I'm certain) visually, but it's also going to come with a bunch of nagging problems that you can't really get around.

I still don't like the way that the SE wave ending kinda removes us from the darkness and claustrophobia of the Deepcore, but this is one of those rare cases of an extended edition where all the added character stuff far outweighs the problems I have with it elsewhere. I can happily watch the theatrical but the SE is my jam.

This one shot has some funky-looking artifacting, almost reminiscent of something like FSR2 in a video game. Wonder if it was originally out-of-focus and Cameron's trying to sharpen it up?

Otherwise year, the rest of the trailer looks pretty damn great. The pseudopod shots seem soft but I can't tell if they've been scrubbed or if it's just the nature of the compositing they did back then.

Modren, that first shot is zoomed in, probably just for the trailer. This was discussed several posts back (see post 347).

And yeah I have no doubt that the softness in the second shot is because it’s an effect shot and is limited by the resolution and compositing of the time (the shot of the pseudopod smiling is likewise soft, and likely for the same reason).

YouTube in the old days was 480p at best. Google did many bad things to YouTube, often screwing up the creators, but picture quality in the platform is far superior now, and videos are a lot more professional.

If one has YouTube premium, they offer a resolution option called 1080p premium, to watch at a far higher bitrate. How good is it though, I have no idea. And I hate it is a Premium feature, just like turning off ads.

Also, YouTube has such a massive library, it isn't possible to move everything to another site, and I feel sad at how much would be lost.

A good example that it's not true that all average people really don't care or notice anything wrong about picture quality at all. We don't give them enough credit, and neither do the studios.

Color was a big part of my job, and though older now, thankfully my eyes still do very well with color. I can pass 100% on those color tests online like this one:

https://www.xrite.com/hue-test

Not bragging. I'm just thankful I can still differentiate color so well. But it's a double-edged sword. I really appreciate seeing so any older films coming out and seeing their true colors come through in these newer 4k scans, when they're treated properly, but then lots of the big studios films have awful color in general these days, so they look awful to me. Older films were so much more colorful. And sadly some directors are obsessed with making their older films look "new again". Only today's new ain't so great when we're talking color.

Improvement in detail, of course. Improvement in color? Nope, it's a step back from the scan.

Probably been mentioned somewhere in the 927,684 pages before but worth mentioning again. It's 99.99% certain the UK/Ireland release will be censored. If you want the film uncut, import it and avoid the UK/Ireland edition unless the BBFC specifically state the film is uncut (which they very likely won't due to UK animal cruelty law hence the mandatory cuts required to the film).
