Miramax and Apple have conspired to make available a new clip from Mike Judge’s upcoming Extract. Finally, a chance to use the notes I took on the panel last weekend that somehow never got published! Extract is Judge’s return to workplace comedy, and this clip is both a low-key office scene and an introduction to three of the main characters. See the clip and read or avoid some spoilers after the jump.

What you’ll see here is basically one of the scenes that shown to Hall H during Comic Con, but it has been trimmed a bit. Some dialogue is gone (will it return for the theatrical? I’d expect so) and a little bit of plot-specific action is also gone. Still, you’ll get the basic idea as Jason Bateman has an unexpected meeting with new temp Mila Kunis. You’ll get a sense of how dry the movie seems to be, which in my eyes is a great thing. When he’s really on, Judge can just let the comedy of a situation sell itself. He does a lot less embellishing than some filmmakers, which makes his stuff seem sparse, but in the long run I think his approach is often the right one.

Here’s the spoilers:

[Show spoiler] Judge commented on the character played by Mila Kunis at one point, saying that she’s basically a grifter who begins the story trying to get money out of the character played by Clifton Collins Jr, who has been handed a settlement after the workplace accident seen early in the trailer. Kunis defended her character, saying that she’s misunderstood and a troublemaker, but going into this clip knowing that she’s got some real underhanded intentions will probably cast it in a different light.

Regardless, I really enjoyed the stuff we saw at Comic Con (there were other scenes, though curiously bleeped of cursing, unlike every other panel) and I’m ready for the return of Mike Judge to the workplace.

I was looking at that picture and thinking "Who is that hairy actor? Probably some unknoOh my god that's Ben Afflec."

I completely forgot he was in it.

Anyway, this looks good. Mike Judge, Jason Bateman, J.K. Simmons, Mila Kunis, and Kristen Wiig are all awesome.

I sure hope Mila Kunis' career keeps going; she is a pretty good actress IMO.

I was fortunate enough to sit down with writer/director Mike Judge this morning in a hotel room packed full of cameras. Unfortunately, we weren’t at a porn shoot. Double unfortunately, you’ll be subjected to me on video in the near future. Start the doomsday clock now.

We had a really interesting conversation about his new film Extract, about the joys of torturing an animated character and somehow the conversation wound up on the subject of what Office Space 2 would look like.

I don’t have the verbatim quote handy because it’s locked away inside a beta tape waiting to be transferred, but Judge’s comment went something along the lines of:

I think Office Space 2 would be a bad idea,” not-word-for-word Mike Judge.

I totally agree with the sentiment. A decade out, it’s hard to imagine
that there would be much more ground to cover in that universe. Luckily, Judge went on to site two other strong reasons against making the film – even though he’s been approached and offered to do it several times since it became a cult hit on DVD.

For one, the director points out that Extract – inasmuch as it’s a story told from the perspective of the boss where the workers are pains in the ass – is a sort of sequel to Office Space or at least a Bizarro World version of it that follows a different company. For two, with the success of television shows like “The Office” and “The Office,” it seems like a lot of workplace ennui has already been mined for The Funny.

I Like Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, JK Simmons, and Mike Judge, plus this one looks hilarious. The smoking bit in the trailer kills me, I'm gonna hold off on more viewings of the trailer until after it comes out I think.

I will be at the theater on Sept. 4 to support Judge. Idiocracy is in my top 10 films of this decade, unfinished effects be damned.

I just got back from the angelica film center here in downtown Dallas where they had a test screening of mike judge’s extract. He stayed after for a q & a, it was fun; he’s a really nice guy. The movie was awesome. Very funny movie. I think Funniest movie of the year so far! Hope you all go out and see it when it comes out September 4. Highly recommend.

4.5 out of 5 and by the reaction in the theater most agree I would say all agree but it was a bunch of film students from the art institute of Dallas so I think there was a little ass kissing going on for mike judge

Judge definitely has a unique sense of humor. Though I like the Apotow stuff that has been going around, this will be refreshing. His timing is a little quicker. This will move fast and will not disappoint.
