That’s because the hype is marketing bullshit. Shocker. HDR is something far more layered and nuanced than what the marketeers paint it as, but people don’t want layered nuance, they haven’t got time for layered nuance, they want an immediate in-your-face difference that’s visible with every single movie. But as said, the effect of it can be far subtler than people realise. I still think that effect is hugely worthwhile, though if you’d like some alternative evangelism then the13thman will happily spread the gospel of our lord and saviour 3D.

This is due for release in only a few weeks yet there's still no listing on bbfc.co.uk for the new documentary, or the unrated cut. Both will have to be certified. (If they had included the audio commentary that too would probably have to be certified).

Pretty safe bet that we'll get a delay to January or February.

I'm still hoping they simply forgot to list it.

Nothing wrong with getting layered.

P.S. as I am on my first ever watch of Miami Vice (currently mid S3) I look forward to revisiting the movie (which at the time I saw in theatres without the context of the show). I'm curious to re-discover who they got to play Castillo.

I was really looking forward to this when I heard they were doing the remaster, and although I'm disappointed its no longer 4k I'd still love to own it as I love Michael Mann and this is one of my favorite movies.

I'm nervous now that it specifically says Region B, any idea if this will be playable in USA? I've never ordered from 88Films before so not sure what to expect.

Hmm, I just checked again and it appears that Universal actually did have the unrated/director's cut and the commentary submitted for classification in 2007/8 (even though they never released it here).

But, there's still no information on the BBFC site about the new documentary which I assume would have to be classified.

Let the speculation begin: what was the reason the plug was pulled? Mann didn't have time to supervise a UHD release? Universal want to release it themselve? 88 couldn't afford it?

Probably a combination of any of the two (or more). I suggested that if Arrow had released it, they might have the clout to have perhaps twisted Universal's arm in the right direction (though would've been heavily delayed, and they probably wouldn't have announced the Blu-ray before knowing whether or not UHD was possible). We won't know if that was the case though, so I suppose a UHD may come from another territory one day.

I get the impression Mann can sometimes make or break a release too, depending on his mood or what he's doing at the time (press for Ferrari at the moment, I'd imagine, as well as pre-production on Heat 2). Maybe it wasn't the right timing with him as well?

PS: Now, talking of Arrow can 2024 be the year we finally see them release The Last of the Mohicans in a great 4K edition? We know they have the rights, and they have the appetite for Mann (looking forward to finally seeing the much discussed 'director's cut' of Blackhat).

That makes a lot of sense. Wasn't a UHD of MV listed on some weird Russian leak list a few years back?

With Mann's involvement.. I don't know. He didn't seem involved at all in Blackhat and I think the DC only got included because one of his assistants on Twitter saw everyone asking for it and then worked with some of the producers to make it happen.

I might have asked this elsewhere but for something like this to be released, would the director have to approve the master used? Did 88 Films even create a new master for the Blu-ray? I think someone mentioned it's a DGA rule but maybe only for the US? Which is why Arrow was able to release Blackhat without his express approval?

Edit: Didn't James Luckard also mention this edition is missing the director's commentary? Could that offer any partial explanation as to why there's no UHD from 88?

I'll be looking forward to reading reviews of it, hopefully someone can A/B it to the previous releases.

I already have the US blu-ray of the unrated cut and it's fine. If memory serves right there's a slight difference in brightness/contrast between it and the Universal theatrical cut release, but off-hand I can't remember which way.

I worked in a cinema projection booth when the film was released and it was watching it several times that led me to fall in love with it.

Edit: yeah the Mann commentary isn't included according to this - https://88-films.myshopify.com/products/miami-vice

I did too back in the day, do you remember that Mann was one of the few directors that would include a letter in the 35mm film cans? A nice touch, but I remember he wanted Public Enemies played at a eardrum-destroying volume, so I promptly ignored it A great time to be a Mann fan, my Tokyo Vice BD turned up yesterday, this and Blackhat soon and then Ferrari in the cinema, lovely.

Yes, it's pretty exciting at the moment. My favourite director. Saw the trailer for Ferrari again while at the cinema yesterday. Looks really good. Would love to see Public Enemies played at loud volume in a cinema. Some great shootouts in that one and it's a better film than is sometimes suggested. Must get around to buying Tokyo Vice.
