You know, for the record, I don't know what was done to the negative for this release, and have yet to see the disc...but the YouTube scenes linked earlier? I know I'm probably going to get a lot of flack for saying so, but...they do look pretty astonishingly good, *especially* for BEING YouTube videos. Maybe it's been fudged with, AI-enhanced, I don't know...but...it certainly was pleasant to watch. At least when I just decided to watch the scenes and not fixate on these things. And yes, I know the whole point of the forum is to fixate, etc. Just saying...I think it...looks good. Shrug.

No AI or upscaling was used evidently.

Exactly.
That, and also removing downloads that people payed for (like Apps, or music albums, out of the blue), or TV shows that you still have to watch.

As long as Blu-Ray and 4K UHD continue to exist, they will always be my "go-to" formats for watching TV shows or movies.
Not to mention that 4K streaming sucks so badly, here, even with the best connection.

So discs will always be my favorite way for consuming media.

I just wish there was a medium less fragile than discs. I'd be happy with a USB stick or something. No scratches on those.

Not another Jurassic Park/Mummy boxset, please.......specially for the price.
Couldn't they put the discs in plastic sleeves at least?

Very similar to edge enhancement, it has that look of ringing around hard objects. He said it was the film stock, and after taking a second look I agree with him. The sharpness that I'm seeing is not digital sharpness, it's actually the film stock with a mix of camera ringing.
hmmm maybe I'll be proven a fool, but how in the world can any film stock cause ringing? at first thought, it can't imagine how it could even be possible.

now it is true that some camera lenses have awful bokeh and you can get some nasty harsh effects, perhaps they meant that (except they specifically said the film stock ) but you'd think for a billion dollar project they'd use some lenses with some buttery bokeh or run of the mill at worst and not one of those harsh ones where you can sometimes for certain objects just the right degree of OOF or barely OOF a sort of harsh double edging or other weird things. You would not notice this in any continuous areas of totally in focus.

In my experience, I have yet to get a badly scratched Blu-Ray/4K UHD one that won't play.
DVDs, oh yeah. I got many of them scratched.
Blu-Ray on the other hand, a very small percentage.
Even those that took a month to arrive in the mail, were always in good conditions.

Those that I got scratched were put in cardboard sleeves (like The Mummy and Jurassic Park 4K collection).
I eventually ended up buying those housed in regular plastic cases and steelbooks.

But, even if I received a loose disc floating inside the case, just a little cleanup and it would play fine.

Not sure if studios will ever give out USB drives or custom HDDs.
But I would like the idea of having, at least, something that I can play wherever I want on any device, instead of having to rely on a platform to watch something.

I rarely get scratched discs, but my 64-disc Doctor Who set had three bad discs. I haven't called them yet, but someone in that thread said that the BBC asked the person to send the whole set back. This is the problem - discs and the process to manufacture them are flawed. While rare, it does happen.

I'd like to see a medium change not for me, but others.

Except memory sticks fail, even if just sitting there. In fact, there's concerns about SSD storage not doing well if stored unused long-term. I would not trust buying media on memory cards or sticks. I too wish a better alternative chip-like format existed, but it would need to be able to last decades, something memory cards won't do. They're not archival. They're also prone to instant random failures.

I regularly get scratched discs. It's a major battle for me with this hobby. The Mexican plant is infamous for their scratched discs. And that can also affect resale value, even if they do play.

No matter the medium, backups are always important.

SSD is great for its speed. But for actual archival uses, companies either use traditional hard drives or the good old magnetic tape.

Filling right up to the far edge of the disc can lead to more playback problems from what I've heard in the past. Not sure exactly why.

It surprises me they haven't added it to this release, considering they *did* bother to produce new stuff, and it's not 5 minute junk.

Well for one thing, they'd have to license the Enya song which could very well be pricier than the entire budget to create the UHD.
