Fly 2 is great. That dog man! As an adult I can appreciate the first is the better film but as a kid growing up I always preferred two.

Alien 3 is better than all other Alien movies and a perfect ending to a franchise. All other Fincher films, aside from The Social Network, are even better.

I'd argue in Goodfellas though it feels like the film deliberately drains out the glamour in the latter stages. Obviously it shows gangsters being bastards across the film but up until Pesci's death it also has some glamour to it were as the 1980 section thats deliberately removed.

In Casion its less of an issue of course because....

[Show spoiler]Pesci lasts until almost the very end of the film

Obviously the first is superior but the sequel is a damn good flick in it's own right.

And you got to love the dramatic irony of the villain's fate.

There are only three Nolan films I kinda-sorta like.

"Insomnia" and "Inception" (a little bit), and "Oppenheimer" is very good but has been vastly overrated.

Other than that, you can have him. And keep him.

The Batman movies are okay, but otherwise I can leave him.

Just for trolls and giggles:

[Show spoiler]Bruno Mattei > Christopher Nolan

But I put that all aside when I watched it again with expectations adjusted. Second time around I still thought it was crap.

Doesn’t Fincher himself hate the movie?
Yeah, its bad. Hated it way back when it first came out. Tried again a few years later. Sucked. And then the heralded "work print cut" or whatever it was called was supposed to make it better. Nope, suckage continued. The entire premise, plot and story is despicable. But, wrong thread.... our take is the popular one.

The glamour drains mostly because thats what happened. Like any life of crime, eventually the bill comes due as they say. Its all fun, games & great times until it catches up with you. It always does. Like Henry says: "Then, it was all over".

Tommy's death doesnt cause the film, to run out of steam at all though. A lot more happens and it remains highly entertaining right until the end. Henry and Jimmy sort of went on their own as they were now balls-deep in the drug thing. Goodfellas is just about perfect, IMO.

The original Insomnia is so good, Nolan's version barely makes sense by comparison.

I've still not seen the original, even though I have the Criterion someone gave me. I'll get to it. I bet it is better.

Think I liked the remake for the cast, mostly.

Unpopular opinion: Michael Cimino

The general consensus is Thunderbolt and Lightfoot was a good debut, and The Deer Hunter was lightning in a bottle greatness. A one-off.

But I think that Heaven's Gate, Year of the Dragon, and The Sicilian are all great in their own way. Flawed, but great filmmaking.

Desperate Hours is decent. Never saw Sunchaser.

I’m not a fan of Sunchaser, but I’m a big Cimino fan! Thunderbolt & Lightfoot is my favorite Clint Eastwood film. Also features the great song, "Where Do I Go From Here" by the fantastic, Paul Williams! I think Cimino did three masterpieces, Thunderbolt, Deer Hunter, & Heaven’s Gate. Then I really like Dragon & Sicilian.

Yeah I don't think it "runs out of steam" but its used to shift the tone of the film, we shift from something in which the lead characters whilst immoral seem to be on a path to ever more glamorous high up mafia lives then have that closed off and shift towards ever more tawdry and less glamourous lives.

The Social Network is actually my favourite Fincher movie but also love Se7en, Gone Girl, and Fight Club.

Godzilla Minus One is more enjoyable than Oppenheimer or Killers of the Flower Moon.
