I haven't seen Chess of the Wind, but will. Another Iranian film I adore that needs a Blu-ray release is Talebi's Willow and Wind (1999).

If you're in the NYC area, Kurosawa's Dersu Uzala will be playing at Lincoln Center on January 28th and 30th from a 35mm print.

I really think Amazon needs to re-evaluate their "high bar" that they use to decide whether a return gets relisted for sale or not.

Case damage, especially on the Criterion digipaks, can be whatever. Why though, would you send something that's damaged AND never has a chance to sit vertically on a shelf? This isn't just something that was wrapped too tight, there's crush damage on at least one spine.

Wonder if Janus is presenting this? Please let the Blu-ray be close.

I was checking out MoMA's website, and noticed Janus has been credited for the following films as part of the "20th MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation" program. Some are known to be with them, but there are some acquisitions that haven't been previously confirmed.

I've had this on my computer for some time and never got round to locating subtitles. So does this mean it might get a physical media release?

Yep, the first, and I believe only film Kurosawa shot in 70mm (specifically Russia's SovScope 70). The prints for those are hard to find. I know BFI screened it from one earlier this year.

For me, 2023 was a great year for Criterion by finally giving us Freaks and The Unknown. Here is hoping Criterion makes 2024 great by giving us these....

Haha, I know you are joking but you are probably not far from the truth. That's why if I just get one of those on the list, I will consider it a banner year for Criterion!

More Amazon films deserve discs, so I would be fine with Catherine Called Birdy.

You missed the memo. The internet decided you aren’t allowed to like that. Prepare for some old dudes frothing at the mouth and screaming at you for liking it.
