Thankfully we've had 42" OLEDs which a lot of gamers jumped on, and PC monitors have raised their games.

I accidentally bought the original Gladiator release. I’ve kept it as reference quality for shithouse transfers, and to show my mates how “Grain is, for want of a better word, is good.”

In the case of Gladiator though, I think the dizzy realised what a shitshow it was and re-released the title, most likely firing whoever prepped it.

I don’t think there is much we can do to change JC’s mind when he preps a film for 4K. With T2 in 4K, no matter how much derision there was on the internet, there is/was still no fix.

Many artists. that would have worked with film, like the digitally manipulated look. My wife did a fine art degree in the 00’s. Sadly, the DNR’d, over sharpened and processed look was what she was taught to do back then.
Someone in Australia stuffed the local release of Chopper, with too much digital tampering and grain filtering. Probably a classmate of my wife’s. Had to purchase UK’s Second Sight release to get a filmic looking transfer of Chopper.

I believe Cameron is essentially a “grain hater”, again, for want of a better word. He specifically mentioned when he DNR’d Aliens for the Blu-Ray release that he was not happy with the film stock of the ‘mid-80’s, as he didn’t like how grainy it looked.
JC mentions in an interview how he was very happy to be able to clean up Aliens, for the most part; as there are a couple of shots on the Aliens 1080pBD that still look filmic, with most of the grain intact.

Aliens 4K is in trouble, with Cameron prepping the transfer, as he has/will choose to remove film grain, no matter how much fine detail is lost in the process. It’s a gods-damn shame.

Watched the iTunes version of this on my 55" Samsung QLED and I think it looks awesome. I saw this in the theater as a kid, and i have no recollection of what it looked like, but this looks like a great upgrade to me.

I went on bit of a retro Alien kick during the pandemic. You can't beat the audio on those LD's and the video isn't to bad when ran through my receiver out to a 42" plasma. Projected isn't to bad either.

Laserdic art in general was amazing because like vinyl, you get a huge crisp image of the art. I even saved a few laserdiscs because of the art.

Might want to remove that shrinkwrap.

Thing about shrinkwrap is that, over time, it keeps shrinking. It will warp the packaging and the discs in the long run. I bought a ton of clear vinyl sleeves for my LDs back in the '90s.

It looked nice, but weighed a TON. I've actually had shelves sag from them. The containers I have for my remaining LDs are in storage and are painfully heavy.

That Alien LD had an LFE track that could be measured on the Richter scale.

Shelves are built cheaply these days. Many of my shelves sag from blu-rays and books. I try to flip them upside-down every so often to balance them back out but it's a hassle. The center permanent shelf can't be flipped of course so any sagging is permanent.

That remastered Aliens THX LD absolutely slaps. Better PQ than the DVD.

The effort that went into making them was very impressive and classy; often the original poster art, really nice layout, design, photos, etc. were all too cool. Especially when compared to the usual cheap and easy, ugly photshop stuff we get too often with discs.

But...nothing really says Devotion and Invested Commitment or captures the pure essence of cinema like a modern-day floating-head cartoon montage....

This was in the 1990s - and they were fairly heavy duty shelves from the '80s and '90s. That's why I mentioned it.
