Default Is clapping at movies acceptable?

I grew up in a world where nobody, even children, clapped in movie theaters.
As time wore on, my world changed.
By the time I was in high school, the fantasy world and the real world had begun to mingle their loins. People were spending hours, days, and loosing their jobs, playing online role playing video games. People were living their lives in chat rooms, as somebody else. By the time I was in my mid 20's; people had more online friends than real ones, people created idealized, 3D avatars of themselves, that roamed around a virtual world and made virtual money.
Fantasy was, more and more, being accepted as reality, the older I got.
Yes. It wasn't just the Klingons, anymore. It was a little bit of everybody.
As I watched this trend grow, I noticed more and more people clapping for movies, in the theater.

I've started this thread to see if I'm the only one who thinks this is a little too far for society to go.
The actors can't hear you. The director isn't sitting in the back row. The projectionist probably doesn't care, as long as they get paid.
So, who needs the accolades?
Am I a jerk for thinking clapping in movies is stupid?
Here's your chance to tell me I am.
Do you agree with me?
Please state your case, if you do. I don't want to die, in a movie theater, angry and alone, as my head explodes, in a roar of applause.

you should try slow clapping at the end of the movie. Its funny. the whole stadium always joins in. but only at the of a good movie though.

Clapping is pointless. It's not like the actors can hear you.

I voted for NO clapping, but if its a kids movie and there's some applause, I'll let them have their moment. Otherwise I think its a little weird.

Why? Why encourage them? That's like saying "It's okay to start a cannibalistic frenzy, if you try slowly sipping blood out of the back of the guy-in-front-of-you's neck, with a pointy straw. It's funny. The whole stadium only joins in. But only if everybody's hungry, though."

The children are our future.
Maybe people clapped when you say "He's Just Not That Into You", with your wife, because their parents said "It's okay. They're kids."

I don't know if your idea of "acceptable" is really that conventional. I saw you kill that bum and try to feed a kitten to an ATM.

Honestly I happy when people clap. To me it shows the director, writer, and thespians involved have done their job and hooked the audience deep into the movie.

I thought TDK, Lord of Rings, Harry Potter and transformers were great and I clapped at the end of the movies. is it not okay to show appreciation for the movie I and others enjoyed.

I say we should all clap BEFORE the movie starts - when those HORRID slideshow commercial plugs finally end.

I also say we should clap after we see the 16th preview clip of coming attractions.

IMO I rather enjoy the clapping and cheering in movies. It's the reason I still go to theaters to fully experience a film with an audience. The last film I went to see where everyone was going crazy was transformers 2, specially during the "super" Optimus Prime part everyone went nuts.
