Wow, this thread grew in a day! I haven't read it all yet, but I thought I'd let you guys know that the DS9 episode is an HD upconversion from the SD master... So it still doesn't show any hope of TNG or DS9 on Blu-Ray...

This is a true HD transfer...

The first TOS season looks perfect, as well as KHAN. I'm not too sure about the rest... the first movie looks very very good (not restored anyway), but the last 4 kinda suck. IMHO.

Why is Paramount doing that? Rushed releases?
Keep in mind that Paramount isn't directly involved with the TOS releases. That's being handled by CBS. So the workflow of the feature films is not affected by the TOS releases, and vice-versa...

Rik,

Thanks for the informed post. Your answers certainly seem 20 times more logical than the alternatives. But do you have any source on this or is it conjecture.

Regardless of source, I'm certain that this is correct because a True HD version of DS9 would be much larger news.

Thanks

Oh, TrueHD would be larger news? How about DTS-HD MA? Both the DS9 episode and the Animated series episode have been remixed to 7.1 audio and will be done with DTS-HD MA audio, just like TOS itself...

The reason that the DS9 episode "Trials and Tribble-ations" is included is that it's a companion piece to "The Troubles with Tribbles". I think it would be cool to watch both episodes back-to-back since they are 2 different perspectives of the same set of events.

I also do agree that episodes such as "Space Seed" and "Flashback" should accompany ST:TWOK and ST:UC.

As far as the "plot hole" with Chekov in ST:TWOK, Walter Koenig had said many times in convention appearances that he thinks that Chekov was on board but he might be in the bathroom the whole time that Khan was there.

This tidbit is also included on the special features for TWOK in the Original Motion Picture Collection, I believe. Koenig was saying that the reason that Khan said that he never forget Chekov's face is because Chekov was tying up the bathroom for so long during "Space Seed" that Khan couldn't use it. Pretty funny.

I've said this before, but what about "The Manegerie"? That one would have been really good. They actually could still do it since Cpt. Pike was in the new Star Trek.

WOW. So CBS works on the TOS conversion to BD format, while Paramount can work on the movies. Isn't it?

If they're going to the trouble to remix the audio to 7.1 in a lossless codec, why would they not make the video true HD. I'm going to hold out hope for a true HD DS9 and Animated episode until I see them myself.

Personally, CBS may get in trouble if they say the two are in HD and they're really just upconverted. I mean, people have an expectation when they see HD. Things could get ugly if CBS doesn't go through the DS9 and Animated film archives and reedit the episode.

Well, it's probably a lot cheaper to remix an audio than it is to re-create all the special effects in HD... And encoding lossless is just a process... You have to encode the audio into something, so why not lossless?

The Animated episode is a true HD master, but the DS9 ep is upconverted. It's still, technically, HD though. I would like to see at least the film elements be re-scanned in HD, and just upconvert the special effects. They may not look as nice, but I think that would be better than upconverting the entire episode... That might be an option for a full release of TNG or DS9 at some point, you never know...

True, a sequel to the menagerie would have been pretty interesting, as for doing something along the lines of that in the new films its possible, but it would be very different, simply because in this new timeline Pike not only knew Kirk as cadet, but he was also somewhat of a mentor to him eventually handing control of the enterprise over to him. It would be interesting for the character to have the same fate though... I like the idea that every timeline has the same outcome and it's the in between that got all messed around with (so in other words Pike is always meant to wind up in that beeping chair even if everything else in his life is now changed due to Nero and the romulans)

The Rumours now are that "Star Trek 2" will go the route of Khan or harry mudd, but i for one hope they go with something original, or if they want to visit a storyline already told they chose an episode people are less familiar with..Or how about the Mirror Universe, thats got endless story situations in it and it can be original without simply "redoing" a previous episode or movie...definetly need Sylar to wear the goatee though

I think you are probably right... but could you tell us, as others have asked, what is your source for this information? The press release doesn't elaborate.

Because one is a fairly simple and inexpensive task and one is not.

Bill Hunt's sources are saying the same thing:

[Editor's Note: Sadly, our industry sources are telling is that this is merely a 1080p upconvert from the original 480 digital master - not a full HD rebuild, a la TOS Remastered.]

Love season 1 and this will be a blind buy. Glad to see the DS9 episode, too, though that will have me clamoring for Dominion War action in glorious HD. Would love to see some of those big fleet battles on Blu-ray!

Coincidentally I started watching my ENT Season 4 DVDs last night and was surprised how well they looked on my system. Finally I noticed the HD cameras mentioned in the credits. Some months ago I'd popped a TNG episode on DVD and the film quality looked noticeably poor. So it's clear (no pun intented) Paramount/CBS have some great ENT material to release on Blu someday soon. (But for me, I'll only buy Season 4, only season of this series worth buying imo.)

Agreed season 4 of ENT was the best, But season 3 was also some great TV, i love the fact that from the last 2 episodes of season 2 to the second episode of season 4 was all one long story

I don't think season 1 and most of 2 are really worth visiting again, but it would be cool if they released the 28 (i think it was 28?) episodes that dealt with the Xindi storyline on one bluray package, that way you could get that whole storyline and avoid having to buy season 2 for the last 2 episodes that lead into season 3

Season 4 is Definetly worth owning though, its a shame the show got cancelled just as it was getting interesting..the proposed season 5 about the earth/romulan war would have been awesome, but we all knew Star Trek Fatigue would set in eventually, i'm actually surprised the franchise lasted until 2005 before needing a break and then rebbot of sorts

I, too, liked ENT seasons 3 and 4. (Actually, I liked the whole series.)

Have you noticed how the TOS S2 price on amazon.com keeps jumping around? First, it was $90. Then, it dropped to about $72. Now, it's $84.99. I doubt if it will stay there, but who knows?

Last i checked the suggested retail price was $108

It seems like they added the DS9 and animated episode just so they could charge more, lol

Still the bluray even at a price like 108 will be cheaper then the DVD season sets, i paid around 120 a piece for those when they first came out
