I know it's a flawed release and many of the complaints are valid, but I guess I'm just a basic toku bit.ch and am thrilled to get anything halfway decent on disc. Ordered it immediately.

The alternative was literally nothing. It's hard to say how much was laziness or Toei's restrictions. A UK company may have done a little more, but there's nothing yet. I'm glad enough that I don't have to pirate or stream these movies now.

edit: Answering my own question, I assume it's because it's only English-dubbed, and not Japanese-language like the rest.
Yeah, I'm guessing this wasn't licensed from Toei, or at least not sourced from them. The HD master airing on Toei Channel is in Japanese language and approx. 1.37:1 aspect ratio. I recently viewed the film from a Japanese theatrical print in Laputa Asagaya's sci-fi retrospective and it was likewise 1.37:1.

The great news is the rest of the films are in Japanese. People will be surprised by how much better Invasion of the Neptune Men is its original form without the annoying dubbing and the completely nonsensical re-editing of the action scenes with repeated shots and reversed chronology.

This sounds like a great set. I’ve never heard of these films. Need to venture into this genre.

I think I figured out why Prince of Space part II wasn't included, but can't really say for "reasons", but if it's the reason I think it is, then it's really not Shout's fault it wasn't included.

Surprised there's no MST3K episodes since Shout has a hand in both.

Which makes you wonder why they couldn't have included the US versions for Prince of Space and Neptune Men, if only in SD, since they had previously licensed them for MST3K. The MST3K DVD for Neptune Men also included a interesting retrospective on Toei Studios by August Ragone which would have been a welcomed port on this Blu-ray set.

Terror Beneath the Sea has been on Tubi for awhile under Shout's branding. I'm guessing they acquired the US version from the previous holders in a packaged deal, and for whatever reason did not bother to go through Toei to get the proper Japanese print. Probably the same reason why they didn't bother getting the Japanese version of Message from Space after licensing it from MGM. But who know can say for sure?

Sales seem to have slowed down now that the poster is gone and have only sold 67 since it went back up, but still think it's pretty good. I wonder if this will ship before the stated release date.

If it had to do with licensing or whatever, then I think they would have been better off not releasing Planet Prince at all, especially since they fail to acknowledge that what they are releasing is featurette 1 of 2, because that just serves as a blueprint for future defective releases, and it has already fueled erroneous speculation about the length of the Japanese version. From the Facebook comments on Shout's post:

"the English dub is a compilation film of 2 seperate Planet Prince matinee films which is what Prince of Space was called in Japan. The original Japanese version is indeed only 57 minutes"

Anyway I really take offense to the whole "half of Planet Prince isn't as bad as not having the set at all" thing because I don't like a misunderstood movie/featurettes that I enjoy - now even more misunderstood as a direct result of this release - being treated as collateral damage.

At this point you're making this a bigger than it needs to be. From what I read and was told the first film doesn't end on a cliffhanger and tells a complete story. It's not like you're missing half a film.

Yeah it's no big deal, it's just not even slightly contextualized, and it's only half of what was dubbed and edited into the film that people recognize the most, and only half of what has been put on both a DVD and a VHS release in Japan. Cop outs are always acceptable when it's most niche films in an already niche sub-genre. The ensuing confusion is also fine because hey Golden Bat finally got licensed. Anyway I'm done posting here since nobody cares and this thread is soon just going to be clogged with "my order finally shipped!" posts anyway instead of substantive criticism. If this release and this thread tell me anything it's that tokusatsu fans are very submissive and will tolerate pretty much anything if it means more stuff gets released. Shout understands this, Mill Creek understands this. This is what "I'm glad we're getting anything" and "as long as it's in Japanese with English subtitles I'll be fine" mindset gets you. They're just seeing how long they can boil a frog until it eventually pisses off the most easily pleased of you all.
