I know it's a flawed release and many of the complaints are valid, but I guess I'm just a basic toku bit.ch and am thrilled to get anything halfway decent on disc. Ordered it immediately.

The alternative was literally nothing. It's hard to say how much was laziness or Toei's restrictions. A UK company may have done a little more, but there's nothing yet. I'm glad enough that I don't have to pirate or stream these movies now.

The great news is the rest of the films are in Japanese. People will be surprised by how much better Invasion of the Neptune Men is its original form without the annoying dubbing and the completely nonsensical re-editing of the action scenes with repeated shots and reversed chronology. |

Which makes you wonder why they couldn't have included the US versions for Prince of Space and Neptune Men, if only in SD, since they had previously licensed them for MST3K. The MST3K DVD for Neptune Men also included a interesting retrospective on Toei Studios by August Ragone which would have been a welcomed port on this Blu-ray set.

If it had to do with licensing or whatever, then I think they would have been better off not releasing Planet Prince at all, especially since they fail to acknowledge that what they are releasing is featurette 1 of 2, because that just serves as a blueprint for future defective releases, and it has already fueled erroneous speculation about the length of the Japanese version. From the Facebook comments on Shout's post:
"the English dub is a compilation film of 2 seperate Planet Prince matinee films which is what Prince of Space was called in Japan. The original Japanese version is indeed only 57 minutes" Anyway I really take offense to the whole "half of Planet Prince isn't as bad as not having the set at all" thing because I don't like a misunderstood movie/featurettes that I enjoy - now even more misunderstood as a direct result of this release - being treated as collateral damage. Yeah it's no big deal, it's just not even slightly contextualized, and it's only half of what was dubbed and edited into the film that people recognize the most, and only half of what has been put on both a DVD and a VHS release in Japan. Cop outs are always acceptable when it's most niche films in an already niche sub-genre. The ensuing confusion is also fine because hey Golden Bat finally got licensed. Anyway I'm done posting here since nobody cares and this thread is soon just going to be clogged with "my order finally shipped!" posts anyway instead of substantive criticism. If this release and this thread tell me anything it's that tokusatsu fans are very submissive and will tolerate pretty much anything if it means more stuff gets released. Shout understands this, Mill Creek understands this. This is what "I'm glad we're getting anything" and "as long as it's in Japanese with English subtitles I'll be fine" mindset gets you. They're just seeing how long they can boil a frog until it eventually pisses off the most easily pleased of you all.
