S4 turned out to be one of those series I wanted to like more than I did, but it just didn't happen. Too many subplots in the 4 middle episodes that don't really tie into the main mystery. Also, too little investigative detective work depicted in a series that carries the brand of True Detective. Jodie Foster's character often just accidentally stumbles upon someone who knows something and that then drives the plot forward.

The ending is what it is; I kind of figured that we wouldn't get a satisfying conclusion 3-4 episodes in, because little attention was given to that story strand from the writer. The main takeaway as I see it, is the socio-economic/cultural commentary that is sprinkled out everywhere over S4.

I still want word from an insider who worked on this from the start, if it was indeed conceived as a True Detective addition from the start, or whether it was initially developed to be its own independent thing. Because that's what it feels like to me.

Looks like it was an original idea shoehorned into a True Detective story.

From https://ew.com/true-detective-night-...season-8416223

One thing López didn't want to be compared to, at least at first, was to the first three seasons of True Detective. But, that's because when she envisioned the project originally, it had nothing to do with the show. López says she initially pitched an idea for a project called Night Country, which she describes as "a murder mystery in the ice," and it was HBO who suggested it could be True Detective instead — an idea she says never even crossed her mind. Once the two parties agreed, Night Country became True Detective: Night Country, and López had the unenviable task of "recalling what connected so powerfully with so many people around the world, but at the same time, doing it in your own voice and making it your own."

Well, this thread has been....interesting. Just finished watching. Short take - I quite enjoyed it. Wasn't put off by the characters, the script, or the supernatural bits. I personally put it near season 1, but that's just me. Not really sure why folks got so wound up about it. I found the story interesting, and the characters and actors as well. That's it; carry on...

Because the final episode didn't make any sense with what happened before it that's one of the reasons why we didn't love it. I don't know what is hard to understand about that. It's fine that you love the show but questioning why we didn't love the show is

Sorry you didn't understand it, but I was fine with it. Of course, I went in with no expectations other then to enjoy the ride. Oh well...

The ending I got it but people to say it was as good as season one is truly insulting. The first season had a great cast, writing, showrunner, and characters. The first season was also a grounded Detective series the current was not, and the ending was not ****ed up as first season when everything is revealed.

Happy for others who liked this season but for me this season is worse than season two.

I appreciate that you kept it on topic, and it's cool that you liked it.
