Hot Imagine Entertainment Package ‘After The Hunt’ From Writer Nora Garrett Lands At Amazon MGM Studios With Julia Roberts Starring And Luca Guadagnino Directing

EXCLUSIVE: After coming together at warp speed over the past month, Deadline is hearing the Imagine Entertainment package After The Hunt from screenwriter Nora Garrett has landed at Amazon MGM Studios with Julia Roberts attached to star and Luca Guadagnino on board to direct. Garrett penned the script and Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum will produce for Imagine Entertainment with Guadagnino producing through his Frenesy banner. Garrett will also exec produce along with Imagine’s Karen Lunder.

The film is an intense dramatic thriller about a college professor who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star pupil levels an accusation against one of her colleagues, and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come to light. Allan Mandelbaum brought the script into Imagine and worked with CAA to get it to top talent like Guadagnino and Roberts.

Since landing at Imagine Entertainment, which has been developing it for some time, the spec has been one of the more talked about scripts in recent memory with several agents telling Deadline, ” It’s one of the better scripts I’ve read since the writers strike ended” leading to a number of top tier directors trying to get a meeting with Imagine co-founder Brian Grazer to get the job. Following a recent meeting before the Oscars, Guadagnino locked up the directing job after impressing Grazer with his take.

During MGM's CinemaCon presentation, they confirmed this is being positioned as a 2025 release. So it might take priority over Luca's other project "Separate Rooms", for it to hit that date.

The script is floating online, this is a guaranteed awards contender but the subject matter is very dark.

A more detailed synopsis would be (don't click if you don't want to be spoiled):

[Show spoiler]Julia Roberts plays Alma, a Yale professor up for tenure, when one of her star pupils, Maggie, (supposedly played by Ayo Edebiri) brings up rape allegations against a colleague and friend of Alma, Henrik, likely played by Garfield. She is hesitant to support Maggie however, especially after the accused comes to her with his own version of the story and the threat of revealing their affair.

This will be the first movie that will be released by Sony overseas as part of a newly announced deal with Amazon MGM:

Amazon MGM Studios has tapped Sony to release a handful of its upcoming high-profile movies at the international box office as it goes about building its own foreign operation.

Under the pact, Sony will handle overseas duties for After the Hunt, Mercy, Crime 101 and Project Hail Mary, according to a statement released by the two studios.



Following those releases, Amazon MGM will directly distribute theatrical titles in territories overseas where it launches its own offices, with Sony supporting the studio in other international markets. This doesn’t include the next James Bond movie, which will be handled overseas by Universal.

Director Luca Guadagnino‘s psychological thriller After the Hunt, which opens in select theaters on Oct. 10 before expanding on Oct. 17, stars Julia Roberts as a woman who must confront her own past when a prominent student (Ayo Edebiri) levels accusations against one of her colleagues (Andrew Garfield). After the Hunt reunites Guadagnino with Amazon MGM, which released his Zendaya-led film Challengers.

This is playing out of competition at Venice, and will skip both Telluride and TIFF, to open the NYFF. Based on this I'm not overly optimistic on its awards chances.
