It looks like the U.S. version of this is OOP, but there's a lot of Canadian versions out there that have Region A playback Blu-Rays, and the UHDs are region free. Can anyone confirm the packaging doesn't have French on it? It appears to only on the j-card, "Le Moment de Verite"

I bought a copy from an Amazon reseller whose listing used the stock photo of the U.S. version, but I received the Canadian version. I don't have a problem if they are practically identical (Region A, English language on packaging and menus), but if I knew that's the version they were selling, I could have gotten it cheaper elsewhere.

I'm returning it just on principle. I don't have good luck with Amazon resellers.

"The Karate Kid" Celebrates 40 Years of Crane Kicks with a New 4K UHD Blu-ray June 18th

Get ready to sweep your collection's leg! Sony continues to dive deep into their archives for a new 40th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of John G. Alvidson's classic The Karate Kid. If you didn't pick up the trilogy collection, this edition kicks in the door with weathered VHS-style packaging with some exciting new bonus features.

While the previous trilogy set is barely two years old, Sony is already revisiting the first The Karate Kid on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray to celebrate its 40th Anniversary. More than a simple repressing with weathered VHS-style packaging, this disc offers some new bonus features in the form of a new audio commentary track with the creators of Cobra Kai and if that wasn't enough, the disc also comes with 30-minutes of never-before-seen deleted scene dailies. Maybe not enough for some to go for a double dip, but for fans that only wanted the classic first film, they can now have it in the collection.

SYNOPSIS

Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the coming-of-age classic — from Academy Award®-winning director John G. Avildsen (1976, Rocky) — that will leave you cheering! There is more to karate than fighting. This is the lesson that Daniel (Ralph Macchio), a San Fernando Valley teenager, is about to learn from a most unexpected teacher: Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita in his Academy Award®-nominated performance, Best Supporting Actor, 1984), an elderly handyman who also happens to be a master of the martial arts. His training and these vital lessons will be called into play when an outmatched Daniel faces Johnny (William Zabka), the skilled leader of the Cobra Kai — a vicious gang of karate school bullies — in a no-holds-barred karate tournament for the championship of the Valley.

Yeah, that's a lovely cover and all, and I absolutely love extras, but I'm NOT gonna buy another edition just when I bought the last one a year or two ago and it was supposed to be the complete. I'll just get the extras in some other form.

We want Panic Room (2002), Sony. Not these re-re-re-releases.

Ah, so it begins.

Good for people who only wanted the first film with DV or to upgrade their HDR disc. I'm going to guess II and III will be along after this, since the set is still OOP. Happy with my set, don't need the new bonus stuff. Will be interesting to see if they tinker with the picture at all on this vs. the boxset.

I like the idea. I wonder what kind of material the case is made of.

Gives me hope Ghostbusters 1 & 2 with dv can get another release, but locking new extras behind yet another release of this film really sucks.

Nice! But there is still a major extra that Sony still hasn't included: Before his death, director John G. Avildsen uploaded to his YouTube account the rehearsal movie he shot with a camcorder:

A Re-Re-Release. Bruh

I mean I’m gonna buy it but still. (Since I don’t have any of the other releases)

It’s an extremely long shot but maybe you can reach to Sony about that. June is still a few months away.

I'm content with my Karate Kid UHD set, but my god that cover is terrific. Takes me back.

Are we sure this is just a slipcover? It says VHS style packaging.

It looks like a slip. It's thin and squared edges, looking like an old VHS box. Not 100%, but it probably is just a slip and not some fancy box.

So this. I think one 4K re-release is bad enough already, but Sony reallly is the king of taking the piss. Good thing I don't care about extras.

And if they re-release, how about at least doing re-releases of their actual faulty releases instead, i.e. "District 9", "Dark Crystal" and maybe even "Tax Driver"? Sony does great UHDs, but as a company I really despise them.

Since the cover is distressed would a dent in the steel book be a feature or a bug?
