I don't think Mermaid Legend was confirmed, was it? Bumpkin Soup is definitely coming later.

Incredible announcements. Shinji Somai has been completely unknown in the west until the Typhoon Club release. Now there will be three available!?! I love that.

By the way, I just picked up the last Katsuhito Ishii Collection from the Arrow Store. I'm looking forward to watching that set.

That is one great box set.

Don't forget Arrow's "Sailor Suit and Machine Gun"! That's the Somai release that really put him on the map for me... Can't wait to explore more of his work. Typhoon Club was great but I did feel somewhat burned that Cinema Guild announced a UHD release just after I pre-ordered the TWF blu-ray. Nonetheless, I do want to collect this whole Director's Company series. So I am quite pleasantly surprised that these two announcements don't overlap with the other 2 Somai films that Cinema Guild has the rights to (Moving and P.P. Rider). Hopefully those 2 will also get physical releases from them and we will soon be up to 6 Somai films available in the West!

Incidentally I am even more excited for The Crazy Family.

I just started digging into my Katsuhito Ishii set yesterday (watched disc 1) and that is an amazing release.

I'm a little bit confused by the multiple One Cut of the Dead releases. Does the standard One Cut of the Dead in Hollywood release include the original film, or just the spin-off? Can I get by just with that release, or do I also need to buy the original One Cut of the Dead standard edition? Cheers.

The standard edition of One Cut of the Dead in Hollywood includes the original film so just buy that. It is a little confusing because the reversible sleeve (in the absence of a slipcover) makes it look like it is only OCOTDIH (whereas the sleeve can be reversed to show the original film's artwork), and because they are still selling the bare-bones original standard edition.

A little breakdown of the various releases, and someone can correct me if I've made an error:

Original Limited: OCOTD, with all bonus features on a 2nd disc.

Original Standard: No second disc, so no bonus features.

Hollywood Limited: OCOTD, OCOTDIH, and all bonus features squeezed onto 1 disc. The short film Take-8 from the original LE was dropped for space.

Hollywood Standard: Same as the Hollywood Limited, but no slipcover.

The Directors' Company announcements are incredible. Very happy to see that Third Window managed to get the making of and deleted scenes for Luminous Woman.

No, but I suspect there won't be many more after Kurosawa's Bumpkin Soup. Beyond that there's Mermaid Legend (rights issues), one more Somai (Tokyo Heaven) and Kurosawa (his debut, Kandagawa Pervert Wars, which has not been restored so won't be happening) but the others seem to be true obscurities, many of which haven't even been available in Japan since VHS. Will certainly be buying every one that they release, but I'll be surprised if they do the deep cuts considering there are many other films of the era that would seem like easier sells. They might take a chance on Banmei Takahashi's Wolf: Running is Sex since Door seems to have been well received, but I'm not sure if that one has even been restored.

The sequel film, One Cut of the Dead: Mission Remote (a short), is on Youtube otherwise it probably would've been included in the "Hollywood Edition' release.

Knew what two of the three were and while disappointed no Mermaid Legend (hopefully, yet!) I cannot be upset to get Luminous Woman instead.

I do wish they'd just do the release dates different though. I'm going to pre-order all 3 and just have to wait until the last one comes out. I'll live.

Hoping for another 3 before the year ends!

Are the luminous woman deleted scenes the ones with no sound? I know the japan release has an extended cut that includes them in the running time but without audio. I actually think they are crucial scenes.

Yes, the same ones from the Japanese release.
Unfortunately the sound was lost so it’s just the video

I just wanted to pop in to this thread to say a huge thank you to Third Window for all the fantastic work/releases. I've been on somewhat of a Japanese cinema binge again lately and the stuff you put out gives me such joy.
