I've found this game a curious mixture of genius, originality and cinematic greatness with sheer frustration in controls, responsiveness, frustration and janky-ness. I love the art style, feeling and mystery of this, but this was clearly a diamond in the rough. (Ps. this game is free on PS Collection if you're on PS5- still worth a shot). |

The worst part for me is I can't plat this game even though I got all the hard trophies because I can't get Trico to poop! lol

I got stuck on the part where Trico the dog bird had to pull the chain to lift this door I'm stuck behind. With only one save file, I believe there is a glitch in the game as there seems to be no way out of it. Nothing I've tried works and it's been a couple hours of tries, so I gave up. That was from years ago. Too many other games to play than to deal with glitches or broken games or awful, cryptic puzzles.
I'm a fan of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, both of which I completed. |

This is a great game imo, despite Trico's unresponsiveness. which is intentional, because he's supposed to act like a real animal, but that's another example of "realism" making a game less fun

![]() that sucks, though. I remember worrying I wouldn't get it naturally, because I'd hate to wait for it.. I just checked and it unlocked minutes before the speedrun trophy, I guess I got lucky |

It frustrates me to no end because I saw the poop in my first playthrough but didn't know what it was. If I had restarted checkpoint he would have pooped again and I could have gotten the trophy. Never saw the poop again on 2 more playthroughs and many attempts at locations where it's allegedly more common.

I remember there was so much debate about whether feeding the barrels would make poop more likely lol. I think it's random and not affected by that, but no one knows.

Started playing The Last Guardian again after three years. Because I never turn the PS4 on, I needed an update and was not connected to the network. The controller that I purchased as a replacement for the dead zone on the original not long after getting the console has such a terrible dead zone that the boy could not run towards the camera, but only walk, forcing me to use the original controller whose dead zone is not so bad. Meanwhile, my PC controller is still perfectly fine after a year. Ended up playing until the battery life on the controller was almost out, maybe ninety minutes.
I know it will get tiresome like the first playthrough in parts, but I'm impressed for now, even with it running so poorly. Impressed on a technical level and also by the world and lack of handholding. Sometimes the narrator will hint at what to do, but it's not even close to the on-rails/corridor design that's standard now. Also nice to play a modern Sony game without upgrades, skill trees, inventories and all that shit. But I know this is only because it was greenlit before they started being so boring (delayed for so long that many thought it was cancelled). "Puzzles" are alright. Ico's were better. Quoted the word puzzles because most so far haven't really felt like puzzles, but rather just exploring for the one way forward. I have forgotten almost all of it, but still of course remember how mechanics/items work and how the creature behaves, since you repeat the actions over and over through the adventure. What bothers me more than the performance is the camera speed. One of those games where pushing the stick slightly makes the cam move slowly and pushing it far makes it move much faster, with no degrees in between. The foot movement is like that too. He walks very slowly and runs, with no degrees in between. If they ported this to PC, a keyboard (with mouse helping to control orientation) would perform almost as well as a controller, because of how the range of the analog stick is wasted. |

You can tell that even then Sony gave their Japanese studios less than their American and European ones. Only one musical theme for almost every fight.
Impressed by all the little ways in which Trico mimics animals. I would have preferred holding R1 to climb and hang on, like in Shadow of the Colossus. Toggling with Triangle makes it so finicky and difficult to let go at times, since the boy grabs right away again. Also would like to be able to just hop off ledges easily, since the environments are so much more dense and intricate than in Shadow of the Colossus. It feels very limiting to always be stopped when you approach a drop, to have to jump always. I know that some of the platforms couldn't have been as narrow without this protection. In the heart of the valley now. Almost finished with the replay. Can't remember what to do in here. Last edited by Warm Gun; 03-18-2024 at 05:38 AM. |

The trophy that was the worst was having all the dialogue/messages pop up. Some were tricky as hell and I actually used a guide and handwrote them all down checking off the ones I got. Was glad to have platinumed this years back.
I personally really liked this game despite the janky controls. One of the things I had to learn was to be patient and the beast would eventually listen to my commands. Would have been nice if he responded right away but if you're a bit patient he will do what you wanted. Like a fool I would spam the command haha. ICO was a lot of fun but I truly love SotC. I went nuts and had all three versions as they released. |

The dialog one was bad but at least I got it. There's no way to make the poop trophy happen. It's pure chance and it never happened for me.
