they don't scratch from dropping them on the floor or even rubbing steel wool on them.

If you take a knife to them, you they will scratch. But beyond extreme measures, bd's don't scratch.

Its been a while since the last time I watched my Iron Man Blu-Ray. I'll have to pop it in and see if mine if still working.
I have yet had any problems with any of my Blu-Rays. I hope they dont fail? As I have over 200 Blu-Rays now.

Blu-ray's don't rot like LD's, it might be your player!
Well DVD's do.

To the OP: You need to test those discs on another player, before blaming them. Go to a store if you have to.

DVD's don't rot. Where did you hear such a thing? As long as you take care of them properly, they should never stop working. I guess there have been cases, but that was when the medium was new.

Oh, they do. Especially ones "burned" with most consumer-grade dvd burners found in pc's. They have a shelf life of about 10 years, I think.

I've had a couple that were scratched before they were sealed up and put on the store shelf!

oh, wow. that's a new one on me. I guess I was wrong. I wonder if that was a processing malfunction, like the machines scratched the disc...

Very likely. The most recently "issue" I had was with the Dirty Harry box set. Both "Magnum Force" and "Sudden Impact" were scratched ("Magnum Force" had 3 scratches in fact). Fortunately Amazon switched the set and the replacement was perfect.

Well just to round this out... I found an Optiarc firmware update from Sony for the drive and installed it, and the problem got WORSE. Now it affects other discs - some others aren't recognized at all, and others will be recognized one time but not the next. So I guess y'all were right - it's a player problem.

Yes some DVD's rot. I didn't believe it either when people in forums starting posting about DVD rot, in the late 90's, but I've had a one rot. The audio cuts in and out after the layer change now...It didn't do this when I first got it. The DVD Contact was one many had problems with about 6 to 12 months after purchasing. It became unplayable after the layer change. The original pressing of Devil's Advocate was reported to do this as well.

Type in 'wamo dvd rot' in google.

I also have all my updates in my computer and player, but I cant play any new movies from Fox (since the last 3 months), but the play perfectly in every other player I have. The rest of the movies from other studios play perfectly (new ones or old ones). Does anybody else here expirence the same problem with Fox titles?

I've had some of mine scratched that way in those large multi-disc cases since everyone one of them always has one pop out.

Sometimes they get scratched from heavy use.
