Meanwhile, my bdp-s300 can't remember where a BD was when I shutdown and has no trueHD decoding even though the hardware is there...

This utility updates the BDP-S1 firmware to version 2.10, and provides the following benefits:

Improvements over firmware version 2.00:

Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.
Additional improvements over original firmware:

Adds Dolby® TrueHD and Dolby® Digital Plus Audio decoding functionality.
Enhanced playback compatibility with certain BD-ROM format discs.
Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.
Enhanced customer support capability
Compatibility with the newly released BD-R/RE format (BDMV).
Corrects the output signal status information for audio output and display when Linear PCM 5.1 channel soundtracks are played via HDMI.

And it works perfectly!!!!

I've burnt the disk ready to update the player this evening. Has anyone tried playing Pirates of the Caribbean (or any other problematical disks) following the update? and if so, do they load any quicker?

You just gotta wonder where the priorities are.

Oh I know... they're swamped getting Profile 2.0 working

...and the S500 was really critical to get out the door for ?????

Well Pirates played fine after that one update... But no, they're not quicker. Incidently, the firmware update has been removed from the site for whatever reason.
