Wow. Consider me shocked that Arrow is releasing this. I can't remember the last time they released a new to HD Japanese film, let alone a Kinji Fukasaku film!
This is a really good film! Along with Wolves, Pigs, and Men, I consider these to be his first two GREAT films. This is a bit of a home invasion film that escalates pretty quickly. Think Desperate Hours, but a bit on the darker side. Again, I'm in shock that it was Arrow who picked this up, as I feel with all their Toei films Eureka or Radiance would have picked this up first. Either way, I highly suggest crime film fans give this one a shot. Quote:

YES! Fukasaku's best film from the 60s IMO!

He's my second favorite Japanese director of all time. I've enjoyed nearly almost all of his films, so glad he's getting more love recently. I think more of his films are on now on Blu-ray in the US than even Akira Kurosawa.

I pre-ordered. Any Kinji Fukasaku is an automatic buy from me, along with Seijun Suzuki and Hiroshi Teshigahara.
I'm now a huge fan of Hideo Goshi, having just discovered him in the past two years. I've been slowly adding him to the collection as well. Thanks to Radiance, I literally just discovered the work of Tai Kato. It's maddening that these and other Japanese directors are not more well known, even among cinephiles in the US. It's criminal that even a more relatively recent Japanese director, Juzo Itami, and his films are not more widely known. He's one of my all-time favorite directors. I hope one day, "A Taxing Woman" will be released on Blu-ray. Funny enough, I use Tompopo as a way to introduce non-cinephiles (those folks who don't like pesky subtitles but will watch every Netflix show with the subtitles on) to Japanese cinema because it's so fun and accessible, but I digress. I saw that the US edition of "The Threat" is not listed on Blu-ray.com, so I added it. |

Just finished watching The Threat and it is probably my second favorite release of the year. Arrow took a chance and it's a winner for sure. A home invasion/ransom/noir film all rolled in one big package at a brisk 84 minutes. I had seen this film a few years ago with auto generated subs, so it's truly refreshing to watch it with accurate subtitles.
Like most home invasion thrillers, you're going to feel a range of emotions for the protagonist. Seeing a man truly helpless to save his family is never an easy thing to observe, but in the end you hope the payoff is worth the frustrations you have to endure as an audience member. Renatro Mikuni who was a brief contract player for Toei truly delivers in this performance which I would consider one of his best. The man played some big roles, so that's no easy statement to make. Ko Nishamura also delivers one of his best performances as a man who initially appears collected, but quickly falls apart under pressure. Hideo Murota who probably appeared in more Toei films than anyone is great as the muscle to Nishamura's "brains". Both are great as the villains in the film. As I was watching the film, I wondered what I would do if I was in the shoes of the lead, and it's hard to say as he mostly made some quick decisions and some I may not have agreed with. Overall, this is a very strong film and one that should not be missed. PQ was excellent although it doesn't mention it on the specs I do believe this got a 4K remaster a couple of years ago. Easily the best the film has looked. For most this will be a blind buy truly worth the price of admission. ![]() |

b+n seemed to randomly restrict sales to the UK several years back. some stilll manage to have orders accepted. fondly remembering the days of 5 for £30 at HMV arrow sales. also, the days of £8.99 at amazon before the zavvi takeover. right now, as a market obsessed with collectors and not sold on the benefits of physical media, it feels impenetrable or labourious.
