Hi, All,
I've been in a bit of a running battle on the Wikipedia Blu-ray Disc entry page here. In the section under Profiles an author is claiming that the 1.1 profile will make all current players "obsolete". I've corrected this, but he's now disputing my correction because I'm an insider and supposedly have a conflict of interest. There is discussion of the change at the Blu-ray Disc Talk page here (see Section 83, "Profile 1.1 makes 1.0 players obsolete". For those of you who are familiar with Wikipedia, some reasoned discussion supporting my viewpoint would help make sure the ridiculously biased opinion that existing players will be obsolete would be very helpful. No flamewars, please. Contributing to these pages is very easy to do and doesn't even require a login (though signing up for one will make you more credible). Thanks! Talk |

I just did so, saying that "obsolete" is a correct word, but the definition needs to be clarified. 1.0 players will still be able to watch BD movies, but some (most, from what I've read) will not be able to utilize IME, which, as we know, the majority of people on here seem to not care about (counting those who have responded in those threads; I will add that people do like the features, but more people who respond just want top-notch audio and video).
"The ability of a profile 1.1 player to support secondary video in no way obsoletes the dominant feature of the format, playing back a feature title with high definition audio/video." That's the point that needs to be clarified, and you express it well, Talkstr8t. That is THE advantage of any HD medium, getting higher quality of the material. eh...that guy is biased towards HD DVD...he's been ever since he showed up. He doesn't print outright lies about the formats but he does tend to phrase things in a way to favor HD DVD.
his bringing up of the wiki policy regarding insiders is lame. The policy was created to keep people from unfairly injecting bias. "Obsolete" in this parlay is a biased term. I hate wiki bullies and whatever adverserial respect I had for Ray went out of the window with his response. which, btw, ignores completely your argument and focuses on a secondary issue irrelevant to your points. |

I made a similar note “All players obsolete thanks to the 51gb disc” on the Wiki HD-DVD page. Now the karma of the universe in back in balance and you all can stop complaining.

"Since the claims of Chas Kalsi, several videos have appeared on YouTube of people testing these claims, usually on copies of Talladega Nights included as freebies with some PS3 units. The results seem to support Kalsi entirely with the disc undergoing extensive steel wool scrubbing and vicious attacks with pens and pizza cutters and still achieving normal playback on the PS3 console."
That's pretty impressive!!!!!!! Not going to try it, but really cool! |

Erm...
The point of criticism is the fact that BD Java isn't standardised like HDi is. The new BD standard, says byebye to the 256 MB RAM, for you'll need 1 GB RAM (remember: PS3 has 256 MB RAM) to enjoy the feature of downloading movies while playing another one... Firmware can be updated, but can you also upgrade the RAM to 1 GB? Another point: who'll use those features? ![]() |

Errr...it's persistent/local storage, such as flash or HDD, not RAM.

As Keith says, this refers to local storage, which is persistent memory like the hard drive or a flash memory card. If you don't have enough local storage it just means you can't store A/V clips, subtitles, or other similar data. This is unlikely to be required for the vast majority of titles or players without network support.

I can't believe the grief they are giving you....
Gee, should we correct how the name came about? ![]() For those wondering, "BD" was first, followed by Blu-ray Disc. |

"BD" came in the footsteps of "LD", "CD", etc. Short, ends in "D", and didn't use the term "HD" which could limit the lifespan/message of the format. Apparently BD didn't stand for anything until a year or two later and lots of market research.

I've been working to improve the wikipedia articles related to Blu.
A lot of people (including me) comes to Wikipedia for information. It might help people to choose correctly (which should be blu) if the article is informative. Please help http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...l_disc_formats In case you're interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_DVD Also, don't forget to see the discussion. I had one thing unresolved, regarding the HD DVD TL51 (preliminary approval only) My username: W Tanoto ![]() |

I gave up on it because Ray Andrews is such a fanboy. Notice how he vigorously demands that Fox not be labeled a true supporter because they haven't released a movie in months but goes all out putting in how HD DVD has higher capacity because of a disc they haven't fully approved yet.

This was the last time I remember discussing wiki on here. Ray pretty much went after TalkStr8t for being an insider because Ray insisted on saying all 1.0 profile players will be obsolete when 1.1 is finalized. I guarantee you that he won't be the one to insert in that all 1st gen HD DVD players are obsolete when the TL51GB disc gets greenlit. |

I updated the Wiki entry to BD the other day, just removing the numbers from the Region Coding table.
EDIT: I see that under comparisons, the stuff about audio hasn't been updated. So... ![]() fuad Last edited by WriteSimply; 09-14-2007 at 09:50 PM. |

Well, I need all of you guys to support my argument to add about preliminary approval for TL51 (or probably to remove the whole TL51 thing). Yes, I remember about FOX, but I can't said not to add that bit, as it WAS the fact. I suggested to add that it might be because of Fox waiting for BD+, but he refused. What we can do is to find positive things about BD, and add it. Possibly the Japanese sale? 90%+? We need a reliable source, and then we can add it without being challenged. I added the european bit. Please, if it is possible, help us improve wiki article. as I said, a lot of people look at it first before making decision, like me. This will no doubt improve BD sales |

I hop in every now and then but I'm sure Ray will just undo my removal of his bias. He was quick to jump in and add the 51GB info but now he's strangely absent when it's a preliminary issue.
And just like Lee he adds that it's confirmed it'll work in all players when the link he posts says it "should work". |
