But that does not preclude someone in the bankruptcy buying the assets for pennies on the dollars and resuming service. That is a big if, but just scrapping all those kiosks will cost some money. Selling them for anything would give at least a few bucks to the creditors. Chicken Soup for the Soul is being liquidated, that doesn’t mean some of their assets won’t continue after being purchased. |

The 2 at my local Walmart were on yesterday, July 11th. I briefly clicked around and some were saying they were discounted to $2 or $1 rentals. Didn't see any that you could buy. If they still had 24,000 kiosks going they could've appealed to the public. Hey - if you like our service and want to continue being able to rent physical copies of movies, go out and spend $10 this week - etc. If they made $10 with each that would be $240,000. $100 would be $2,400,000.

The more I think about it, the more it is possible for Redbox kiosks to continue for at least a while longer.i
I have seen numbers as low as 24K kiosks to 34K kiosks. Let me pick an easy number, 25K. If each kiosk cost $1000 to dispose from the cost of picking it up, removing electronics and disks for proper disposal, taking it to a recycling center, etc. that is $25,000,000! Even at $400 each, that is 10 million dollars. I can definitely see the possibility that someone buys the business and runs it either long enough to recoup disposal costs or gets it so cheap they can run it as a profitable business going forward. Just shutting down the business overnight will result in a huge financial liability. Selling it for one dollar could be less expensive. |

As of today 7/29/24 I was still able to rent from Redbox. And I think Crackle was still online as of last night. ( I think I checked it).
So if they are liquidating these businesses and/or shutting them down they are taking their time. For companies like Walgreens and Dollar General it could benefit them to have someone buy the business for next to nothing and run it. That way, they wouldn’t have an eyesore rusting away in front of their locations. |

I noticed a few days ago that the Redbox app on my TV said Redbox is not available. I was suggested this video today on YouTube - a video from an employee about what they experienced. He hasn't been told to do with all the boxes of movies he has:

What's really sad is the closure of Redbox has kind of forced me to go the digital route. I'll pay the $25 to $30 for Oppenheimer (should say I have) but something like Wonka when it came out no way. I guess you could get out your tiny violin but I'm sure going to miss taking a chance on junk for $5.99 or less. If something was bad you at least felt like it was no worse than renting from VUDU for the same price. I guess what really prompted this was I was about to get The Fall Guy on 4k disc and a digital code came available for $9.99 I'm embarrased as a believer in physical media I bowed down and bought the code.

I do both. At 2428 on my Vudu account and for some reason only 1705 on my MA account. I guess since streaming is pushed so hard physical could easily become a niche market and actually maybe it already has. I figure this group understands when you have that many it is hard to keep track on what you have. I do know at least for me that total number has shrunk at times for some reason. Though I think it was tv Shows that disappeared. With physical unless someone comes into my house it should stay in my collection. And yes I get physical is not perfect considering the disc rot problem. I've had to replace several of my Warner HD Dvds because of it. I'm old enough I was silly to select Betamax over VHS and HD over Blu during the format wars. Shoot now thinking about it probably would have been easier just to rent and not collect.

The fear is if you rent one and when you go to take it back it is then shut off and they keep charging you. I don't know. The website is dead, or at least is putting up a warning for me. If there are no employees, who would contact all the individual businesses with boxes to tell them to turn it off, etc.?

Considering how willing they wanted to ripoff their employees there is no way I would chance it. Congrats you rent a POS Detective Knight Bruce Willis movie and get souped for a $100 on your credit card.

Not that it proves anything about anything, but I rented a Blu-ray from a Redbox a week or so ago. Normally, 1) I'll insert my card; 2) it'll give me the option to rent a second disc for free; 3) it'll ask if I want an email receipt at an already-populated email field that's connected to my card; 4) I get my disc, and 5) I'm off.
This time, 1) I inserted my card and it took quite a while to move off the pay screen; 2) it didn't offer the chance to rent another disc for free; 3) it took FOREVER for the email receipt screen to pop up, and 4) it was NOT pre-populated with my email address, so I had to enter it manually. I never received an email either at the time of rental nor the time of return. Likewise, it's been over a week and my card hasn't been charged. And to address DeanJames's assertion, isn't there a $25 cap on what they charge you if you keep a disc? So, while it would still be prohibitively expensive if they hit you with a $25 fee, at least it wouldn't be $100. |

I'll miss Redbox. It was an okay service. Too bad it couldn't find a way to stay around.

Yes I don't really know of course. Just seeing so many videos on how they punked their own workers they have lost my trust. I have a bunch of empty Blu cases that need filled so still keeping my fingers crossed their inventory winds up in the Dollar Tree or Dollar General. I have no clue who else may want that type of inventory.
