My Premier Acoustic 120 Sub arrived yesterday right before it was time for me to go to work (13 hours night shift). After 3 straight nights at the observatory, I now have 4 days off.

I got up around noon and unpacked it. It arrived in perfect condition. I guess the trip from Vegas to Phoenix to Flagstaff didn't give UPS much chance to mess up the carton or the sub. It's been bumped a little but not gorged or gashed.

The carton. No sign of the UPS boys playing catch with it.

Yep, the carton says it weighs 60.6 pounds. I brought out my bathroom scale and it reads 65 lbs. But that is not very accurate since I had to hold part of it to keep it on the scale. One thing for sure though, it is heavy.

Wow! Love that piano black finish with cherry. The PA 120 could have just as well been made by Energy Speakers. I am very pleased with the cherry color and piano black finish. You can see how it nearly matches the C-300 tower having the same finish. The C-300 cherry might be a tad darker but the lighting might causing that. The subwoofer exterior finish is beautiful. Even the label at the bottom of the sub's grill is in the style of Energy. I am very pleased with the finish.

  • The PA120 manual is short and sweet. But it has all the info you need to get started and set it up right.
  • Hooking this baby up couldn't be easier: One RCA coxial cable input; set the sub's volume to 6; set frequency control to max, and start with phase control at 0. I like the variable phase control. My Dayton subwoofer amp which cost about 2.5 times as much as the PA 120 only has a dual switch selecting 0 deg or 180 deg. Again, PA's quality is amazing. This sub is a tremendous value for only $229.00 shipped.
  • I've set my Yammy V663 subwoofer level control to 0.0 (range is from -10.0 to +10.0). The V663 LFE control is set to max, 0 db (range -20 db to 0 db). All 7 of my Energy speakers are set to small at an 80 Hz crossover point as is widely recommended. I haven't even had time to calibrate it yet or watch a blu-ray movie. When I do watch a movie, it'll be Transformers first.
  • The power cord is short and might at best have 16 gauge conductors, ok for 15 A 120 V USA standard wall outlets though. But because of the 650 watt peak output, I would not run it off a multi outlet surge protector. The PA 120 comes with a spare fuse. I am running the PA120's electronics directly from the wall outlet. The other power cord plug in the lower socket is from my Adcom GFA 545 two channel power amp which drives the C-300 towers. It draws about 600 watts too. That's about all I'd want on the that wall outlet and circuit.
  • The PA 120 grille cover is very stubborn and doesn't want to come off easily. That's why it isn't off in this pic. It seems to be like Energy Speaker's grilles in that there are studs that it attaches too. But there is no finger sized gap between the PA 120's grille cover and baffle like on Energy speakers. I'd have to use something to pry it off with. But, I dare not!
.

Now all I need to do is to get started. I will keep you guys and gals posted.

Congratulations on your new sub. The UPS guy must have lost a lot of money in Vegas and too eager to get out of that town.

In the future, use a picture editing program and reduce the width of your pictures to 700 or less pixels so that we don't have to scroll to the right to see the pictures. Thank you.

Thanks BD. I'm lucky too. I'm sure the driver lives in Phoenix, about a two hour drive from Flag. The UPS guy was talking to his wife, gf, or SO on his cell while I was signing for it and said, 'I'll be home soon honey.' I'm glad he had some patience getting my sub from the truck to my door!

Ok BD, I'll try to edit/resize them next time. Is there a way that can be done after they've been posted this large? Let me know and I'll do it. Those photos are right from my gallery.

You can edit them and then upload them again to your gallery. After that, you need to go to your post and edit it again so that the new pictures appear. It is a good idea to have all your pictures with a width of approximately 750 pixels or less.

Agreed. I see what you mean after scrolling through the pics I posted here.

When I get a chance I'll edit the photos in my gallery to 750p and then that should take care of the problem here. Thanks for you help BD.

There are rare times where you can find subwoofers that blend somewhat well with your setup. This is one of those times! It looks fantastic. Just at its price point, it is easily worth it just for the styling, fit, finish, and WAF. Great performance is just an added bonus.

I haven't told her yet, but I'm planning on buying another one to put on the left side of the fireplace. I kept this sub at that position however I really liked the cleaner tighter bass that I was getting from my original preferred location as shown in the pics from my gallery. At the other location, the 20 Hz to 30 Hz range is better but lacking above that range. Thus, two PA 120s should do just nicely complementing each other.

Yes, anyone who has cherry speakers from Energy or Polk should consider this sub for the matching styling and finish.

As far as performance goes, this sub puts my old Dayton Titanic 1200 (DIY)to shame. The bass is just cleaner and tighter. I was shocked. The 12" Titanic went belly up after nearly 9 years of use, thus immediately I was able to make that distinction although I realize it's a subjective one. It isn't even broken in yet. It's amazing.

Damn, now you're making me Consider adding a 2nd one (I'm ordering a Black one shortly here today), but as my other PSW-10 mainly is used to Compliment my Main/Front one, i'm sure it'll be fine doing that job for my new PA-120. I see your pics look smaller per Big Daddy's notes in your Gallery, but are still quite large in the thread here (still need to scroll left to right to see the pics, read your notes, etc.) - Anyway, I think most people in the thread here note NOT having to add Polyfill to these, as they sound pretty impressive if not great, right out of the box, right? Plus, you mention the Grill being really tightly attached anyway, so as to take it off for that might be difficult (& you don't want to risk Scuffing it in any way! ). Let us know if you get to test it out some more over the wk-end & your findings (TDK "hospital explosion scene" should be a Great scene to see how it performs).

Heh, finally. I'll add you to the list.

rwojtalewicz (man, I always have to copy your name- can't spell that!) thanks for the great pics. That's the first quality shot I've seen of hte cherry finish. Looks really good. You mentioned the fuse- made me realize I think I threw mine away on accident. DOH! I'll have to check and see if I still have it. Your comment on the grill is spot-on- I took mine off once to look at it and won't do it again. You really have to pry at it, but on the plus side it sits very flush against the cabinet. Glad you're happy with yours.

Thanks Aramis' - As for the grill thing, good thing most of what I've read is this doesn't really Need polyfill to tighten up the sound; it sounds good right out of the box!

* Tal's - Lol. I don't know about THAT, but I'll see what I can do... *

Don't get me wrong- it comes off. Most likely though you'd want to go through the plate amp to polyfill anyway, no?

IF I have to or think it might help, probably, yea. But yours doesn't have any right, & sounds fine? I'm sure I'll give it a few days to Really give it some different Blurays with good LFE, plus with it taking the place of my front PSW-10 up on the SubDude & Table, (23" Off the floor!), it will be perfect to get a good idea of its' power & punch.
