I wonder who will be the trouble maker that tries to grab it on a closet visit. John Mulvaney will tackle him as he tries to leave.

As a collector with a film library well within the top 1% in terms of overall title count, I came here to say most of you are just wrong.

I know Criterion
I own Criterion
I own zero of these films
I have heard of maybe 10 of these films
I almost never buy Criterion just because of their prices, even when on they have a sale.
I might actually buy this set, but only after more research, to see if I even care about the included films.
On sale for $10ea. I think this is exactly what I would be looking for, for these kind of titles.
If you want to dump your Criterion BD collections, maybe you should try selling them to me for $10ea. shipped.
Because that isn't likely to happen, at least not 40 titles worth, I will probably be buying this set for myself. No gift required.

I am not sure how happy that customer will be once he will learn that 90% of his discs will be scratched and that they will need to get at least 2 replacement boxsets or more to get unscratched discs.

That's the only way the stock of this item is going to run out, a minority buying 1 boxset and trying to ask for multiple replacement copies to get a mint boxset with good discs.

The majority of people who are buying this probably aren't even aware of the scratched disc issue, and don't even look for that.

Well for the price asked I will, for the people gifting it to someone, they might get second hand embarrassment from it.

Honestly I might get this if it’s at $400. The only movies on this set that I own are night of the living dead and y tu mama tambien. Not bad for a bunch of criterion movies

Doing a collection of the first 40 movies Criterion released with all their original bonus features and then some could be great. Though it'd run into the same issues this one does with duplicating titles most people already have, it would have more thematic relevance to the 40th anniversary and possibly enough extra material to persuade people.

or they could do criterion 40K. their first 40 films in a boxset all with new 4k releases.
the only dups would be the releases that they already have a 4k release for

Down to 559.99 on Amazon

I'm not mad at this box.

The diversity of films is a plus.

I know nothing of this side of things... but is this aimed at libraries and college film departments instead of the individual collector, maybe?

How in the hell can anyone afford this? Almost $600? I know prices usually drop before release date but come on.

$400 in the 50%-off sales. That's $10 a film, which works out to over 75% off buying them individually.

It would work out to around 51% cheaper than buying them individually.

Yep that’s still not cheap for people like me whom do not want every single one of those titles I’m still not buying it. As there’s a number of titles in that collection I have literally 0 interest in owning like Ratcatcher, Safe, Pickpocket, Sullivans Travels, and a few others from that collection.

I think that’s what it’s for it wouldn’t surprise me at all not for collectors like us.

Yeah, I switched back to MSRP to calculate the 75% for some reason. My brain isn't in gear today.

I've never been a big Criterion collector. The only stuff I have picked up is the samurai films / sets, the Zatoichi set, the Godzilla set, the Lone Wolf & Cub set, Bruce Lee set, Once upon a Time in China set, Police Story set and Last Hurrah for Chivalry. I might pick this set up down the line at some point on sale though because about half of the films in the set I haven't watched. My collection could use some film snob flexing I suppose.

There are tons of people out there richer than I am.

With the news covering a "resurgence" of physical media, this set makes a great pick-up for them to put on their shelf next to the Samsung Frame TV mounted above their fireplace. When their friends come to visit, they can all pretend to have watched the films and discuss how Hollywood doesn't make films like this anymore.

When someone's date suggests they watch one of the films in the collection, the host will fumble for the smart TV remote and use the search function, then if they're lucky, it'll be on streaming and everyone will act like they're paying attention.

The more I look at this list of films, the more I like it.

Quote:
8½ (1963), Tokyo Story (1953), All That Jazz (1979), Bicycle Thieves (1948), Repo Man (1984), Naked (1993), Jules and Jim (1962), Being There (1979), Weekend (1967), Yi Yi (2000), The Night of the Hunter (1955), Pickpocket (1959), Sweet Smell of Success (1957), On the Waterfront (1954), Do the Right Thing (1989), Ratcatcher (1999), Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971), Mirror (1975), Barry Lyndon (1975), Safe (1995), Seconds (1966), His Girl Friday (1940), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985), Y tu mamá también (2001), My Own Private Idaho (1991), Love & Basketball (2000), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Ace in the Hole (1951), 3 Women (1977), The Red Shoes (1948), Down by Law (1986), La Ciénaga (2001), Wanda (1970), House (1977), Sullivan’s Travels (1941), The Battle of Algiers (1966), A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962), Persona (1966), In the Mood for Love (2000)
If you had told me Criterion would put out a box with all the bolded titles included, I would have chuckled. But here we are. It's an interesting hook for a box set.

Quote:
CC40 includes digital restorations of all 40 films, hundreds of hours of supplemental features, and a 216-page book featuring essays on each film by critics, scholars, and authors.
One additional disc of new special features would have been nice.

Quote:
... Criterion’s new owner, Indian Paintbrush founder Steven Rales, wants to keep the video label working at the highest pedigree. Rales also owns Galerie, an online film club and subscription service that offers access to films, essays, and live events featuring a rotating selection of filmmakers, including Wes Anderson, Pablo Larraín, and more. AKA: Galarie is the perfect companion to The Criterion Channel, Criterion’s streaming subscription service, which boasts several CC titles in its catalog plus a rotating monthly selections.

I doubt it, considering the packaging is the opposite of what libraries and film departments would want (individual cases for everything to lend them out separately).
