Default Halloween Night Playlist

I know sorta early...but whatever...I'm sure the 30 Days of Halloween thread has already started.

Whenever we host a Halloween Party I always try and come up with 3 movies to play on the living room TV in the background (audio is off).

Now, there are obviously a tonne of incredible horror movies I could play - but I'm trying to find the fine line between great movies, and ones where anyone at a glance can look at the TV and see something iconic. Obviously with no sound, any dialog heavy movie is going to be a fail.

I also try to have the 1st movie somewhat tamer in terms of the gore and ramp it up as the night goes on. I remember one Halloween back in the day where I was playing Hellraiser 2 and someone came up to me and asked if I could turn it off as it was making them nauseous lol.

So for this year, I've come up with the following list:

- The Thing
- Terrifier
- Evil Dead 2

Curious as to what other 3 movie list everyone else would choose...

Got work the day off and the following day, so I’m trying to plan realistically with all four “Pumpkinhead” films and a handful of “Treehouse of Horror” episodes (exact ones are TBD).

The first of those movies that we see a few bits of and hear playing in the background is Thing From Another World. In Halloween II we hear another of the movies in this marathon is Night of the Living Dead. Then in Halloween III, we come full circle and see a TV ad for the original Halloween about to air. So they all tie together for a Halloween themed movie night.

How about three actual silent horror movies?

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

The Phantom Carriage (1921)

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922)

Sadly, haven't seen the first two - but yes, Nosferatu is all kinds of awesome and was one I was considering.

I just checked and all 3 are available via AppleTV which is great as I can just rent them and don't have to mess around with streaming one, while needing to run and grab the blu-ray of another etc.

Good to go.

Two years ago I watched the films featured in Carpenter's Halloween on Halloween night. That was kinda fun.

This year I'm planning on:
Army of Darkness
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Dracula (1931)

This thread reminded me that I first discovered both The Thing and Evil Dead II at a Halloween party. The host put The Thing on first and although I couldn't hear it I sat on the couch ignoring everyone and watched it. Then did the same thing when he put on Evil Dead II. November 1 I bought both of them on VHS.

Halloween Night back in the 80's, I was very young teenager watching MTV. They were playing spooky/dark themed music videos. I remember MTV played Synchronicity II by The Police, shortly after that MTV played the original Night of the Living Dead. George A. Romero gave an intro to the movie, it was my first time seeing it. What a great and fun experience that was. To this day, it remains my favorite zombie film.

We tend to get a lot of trick or treaters, so on Halloween night we tend to watch "easy" stuff or stuff we've seen a million times because we know we'll be up and to the front door of the house many times.

Last year was:
The Thing
Halloween III: Season of the Witch

Don't know what we'll end up doing yet this year. I'm going to attempt to build a "fake" TV, mount my tablet inside it and have it looping the flashing pumpkin/silver shamrock song on youtube that runs for hours. and have it on the front porch or nearby.

Funnily enough I remember (off of the top of my head) describing at least two movies I watched over the Halloween period as 'films you could leave silently on a projector in the background of a halloween party'

Mad Monster Party
https://boxd.it/55GVmd

Hell Fest
https://boxd.it/54QvF5

What I tended to do however, was download a number of old school horror trailers, the schlockier the better, edit them all together into a 2 hour or so loop and let them play.

Ya one year there was a 'Top 100 Horror Movies' or something similar on Shudder?? And I just ran it in the background. Doing something like that is always a good option as well.
