I know some people love this film like Shane Rollins, but I just don’t care for it whatsoever.
The Heiress is Clift's best film, but to be fair that's a de Havilland movie co-starring Clift. I highly recommend Criterion's release.

Still waiting for Warner Archive or Criterion to give us The Search.

Judgment at Nuremberg is absolutely captivating...the intimidating running time will fly by. And in a sea of big name stars all delivering powerful performances, Clift steals the entire movie with his heartbreaking, 12-minute acting masterclass.

Raintree County is a disaster.

You might also like Wild River. A lesser-known film with Clift than the ones you mention but still very good.

I wanted to say something about the “are people still buying DVD’s, and if not why?”discussion.

I was thinking that a lot of people who maybe used to buy dvds switched to buying digital movies, some that may be UHD. Both switching to bluray/4k and streaming UHD may be considered an upgrade to DVD for them.

Both The Killers (1946) was heavily featured in a Universal video about their restorations:

https://www.nbcuniversal.com/article...ns%20to%20come

Both the 1946 and '64 versions of The Killers were restored in 4K lin recent years, from The Film Foundation, so I wouldn't be surprised to see one, or both come to 4K from Criterion next year.

Credit to James Luckard for first posting the link.

Would be a nice upgrade since the '46 one on the Criterion release surprisingly had lots of film damage.

The Arrow release of Phantom Lady is going OOP, correct? We can probably expect for Kino to pick that one up in their next Universal deal, if Criterion doesn't first.

I agree. In most cases, digital movies, or even streaming from Netflix or the Criterion Channel, would be considered an upgrade from DVD.

It was not my intention to suggest that you are wrong, after all your interpretation is your own and as such subjective, but to suggest that others have a different interpretation, one which supports the consensus that No Country For Old Men is one of the finest films of the past few decades.

Perhaps if you were to give it a second view, or read the book, you may have a different take.

That's the beauty of art, revisiting a work to perhaps find something new or a different interpretation of the work, or yourself.

I'm in for one, the other or hopefully both.

If you haven't seen the above, watching them back to back is one way, but you could also make time for a triple-bill of the '64 version, followed by Point Blank from 1967, on Blu from WB, and 1972's Prime Cut, Blu or the new 4K, both from Kino.

Lee Marvin in his prime? It's well worth it, even if he doesn't have it.

For the '46 version, there are couple of ways you could go, but I'm partial to a double-bill with 1950's The Asphalt Jungle, also from Criterion.

Indeed. Unfortunately there's a lot of films I like that aren't streamed nor sold digitally but usually available on DVD, luckily not that rarely on Blu-ray too.

The Marnie part at 4:40 and fixing the damaged frames was fascinating to watch.

Interesting that they’ve done new restorations after having licensed a 4K master of the 1964 version to Plaion (formerly Koch media) in Germany in 2020. A poster in the release thread (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=334182) also mentioned at the time that they restored the 46 version as well. Will be interesting to see whether there are any major differences. I have the above-mentioned UHD and it’s absolutely brilliant PQ-wise, so I really can’t see what they thought needed re-doing. They used the old master for the 46 version in that mediabook.

Oh, I could be wrong about the year then. I read an article that said they screened new restorations of the films on Film Foundation's website last year, but they certainly could have been completed years before then. I'll change my post to just say in recent years instead.

edit: I did a little more digging, and I found this informative video with Cassandra Moore, VP of Mastering and Archive at Universal, and she talks in greater detail about the restoration of the two films. They were actually completed in 2018, and premiered at the Venice Film Festival that year. I'm not sure if any additional work has been done to them since.

Talking about Siodmak, hopefully the Film Foundation can finally get Universal to get off their asses and get Christmas Holiday cleared for release (or whoever owns it now).

They'll also be screening Wages of Fear. I have to imagine most of these will lead to new releases, especially the Demy film, which I feel is destined to get a 4K release next year. I've cobbled together the relevant Janus titles below

Good news, Sergei Parajanov's Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965) will be opening at Lincoln Center in October, courtesy of Janus Films, and sourced from a 4K restoration from The Film Foundation / World Cinema Project.

Quote:
Sergei Parajanov - 1965 - USSR - Ukrainian with English subtitles - 97 minutes

Opens October 25!

One of the most beloved Soviet-era films, winner of multiple international awards, Sergei Parajanov’s visionary feature from 1965 summons a world of psychedelic folklore and ritual with bracing originality. Set in a remote village in the Carpathian Mountains, the story follows Ivan (Ivan Mykolaichuk) and Marichka (Larisa Kadochnikova), star-crossed lovers whose families are embroiled in a blood feud. When Ivan marries another woman but continues to pine for Marichka, his wife solicits the aid of a sorcerer to win him back, setting off a flurry of both natural and seemingly supernatural forces. Parajanov, aided by his brilliant cinematographers Yuri Illienko and Viktor Bestayev, creates a delirious, magically charged atmosphere that fully captures the sense of a folk legend brought to shimmering life; its multilayered imagery, free spirited camerawork, set design, and soundtrack straddles the line between ethnography and surrealism, and the result is simply a sensuous tour de force. Despite its international acclaim, the film ran afoul of the Soviet authorities, who mistrusted what they saw as its celebration of a unique Ukrainian culture. A Janus Films release.

Restored in 4K by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project and Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in collaboration with the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Centre and in association with the Dovzhenko Film Studio. Special thanks to Daniel Bird and Łukasz Ceranka. Funding provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation.
