I feel sad this release looked so promising, now I will have to go and hunt down the original, 16gb file of the HDTV version somewhere, and watch the movie that way for at least the next 6 years, until when it will probably be reformated in 3D. What a let down.

Yeah i think im gonna find the hdtv airing of this too :/

why is more of the picture visible on the hdtv version anyhow?

just pre-ordered this today, it will be my first steelbook purchase, hopefully not my last. its rather pricey and sometimes difficult to find steelbook items here in the US i think.

After comparing the HDTV full screen 1.77 and the Blu-Ray, I'll say they come from the same source master film, I see EE in the HDTV too in the same places, the difference is the encoding is better on the HDTV, and no DNR was applied on the HDTV version, plus more EE was applied to the Blu-Ray.

I feel like I was conned big time with this release

It rides on the tail of Blade Runner, and at minimum a new transfert should have been made. I mean, it's not like Gladiator is struggling to make money, based on the success of the film on home video.

I fully agree. Once grain is tempered that cannot be reversed, that means some picture information is lost for that transfer. If the original was kept without adjusting grain (or the picture details) viewers can temper it with display and player adjustments and tailor it to their taste.

However, one can argue that if EE and DNR are applied during the transfer process that can be managed and produce a pleasing picture to the end customer. This argument assumes customer satisfaction parameters and attempting to take a calculated risk to tailor content to customer taste.

My wish is that I will not see any DNR or EE in the movies that I watch.

yeah i realized that, already checked out that thread, i was just saying with there being so few us releases i think its harder to come by some titles here, at the very least pricier.

Yup, I did forget Thailand.

So we have:
- Germany
- Poland
- Thailand
- Italy
- UK
- France (??)

This is about as bad as T2 and somewhere inside of me is worried that they will all be the same cover artwork

i sent a message a couple of days ago to Amazon FR , to ask them if Gladiator would be a steelbook or not. I've received their answer today.
Unfortunately the french edition WILL NOT be a Steelbook.

What do you think?

The only one I do not yet have sourced is the Polish one, but I am just waiting a bit on that one to ensure it is a steelbook, but I think I will order it soon.
