My dogs chase my nieces/nephews/young cousins when they move quick -
i just had a baby girl 5 weeks ago and both of my dogs love her.
we have a 13 1/2 year old BLACK labridor/chow-chow mix daisy. she loves the new addition. at her old age she 'chills' alot but she loves kissing my baby girl whenever we tell her to.
i dont think she minds as long as she gets the leftover food on our dinner plate......lol

our 2nd dog, scooby 2 1/2 years old, a white 100% jack russel loves the new addition. every time the baby cries he RUNS to her and then runs back to us and lets us know she is crying (like we cant hear her)

i feel as long as you have well trained dogs who are LOVING then a new baby wont be a problem.

the jack russel is one hyper dog and he poses no threat to the baby nor ever has.....he just likes 'watching over her' when she is sleeping by sleeping next to her

now if you get a pitbull or whatever, then youre asking for trouble.

im a fan of the pound as-well. it feels good to save a dog from living in the cage that i feel like they will always remember how i saved them.
god forbid the day my 13 1/2 year old diog dies.....im going to the pound a month later to get a new 6 week old AND going to get a greyhound as-well.
dogs dont forget ala elephants. they KNOW you saved them

This is why I'm getting a Boxer...they are consider one of the best 2 or 3 dogs with kids. It has been documented that they actually have some kind of personality trait within them that tends to have them gravitate towards children. I think they look awesome and yet they are not too small nor too big. They may have some energy, but that works with me too. I can't wait to get one, but with a 5 month old and my 4 yr old daughter, we'll wait until they get a bit more independent before bringing in a dog. At least we fenced in our yard this year, so that's one step closer to getting one. I think we will get our Boxer from a Boxer rescue that is around me. I wish you lots of luck Don with 2 dogs, geez!

Boxers are pretty retarded and annoying. just be ready for that, expect it to knock your young kids over all the time.

get a rescued greyhound instead

i think your youngest child, rowan, is old enough to have a dog.
you want the dog to 'grow up' with the kids too.

i just got off the phone with my wife TRYING to convince her to get another dog (a greyhound from the track) but we live in a townhouse so its not fair for a dog that size to be kept inside all day.

so she promised me when he move that i can save TWO greyhounds from death

plus when my lab/chow-chow mix dies, she is 13 1/2, im 100% for sure getting another lab. those dogs are the smartest dogs ive ever seen in my life. im waiting for the day my black dog daisy will talk to me.....'give me some more milk fool'.....lol

That's awesome that you want to do that Don. I love dogs, and around here there are fewer and fewer puppy mills now, so thankfully they should be gone soon.

I would love to get a dog now Don, but you have to pick your battles, as you know. I chose my HT as my "battle" for the all important WAF. She said in a couple of years she would be OK with it, so I have to give her that one. There is still soo much I want to add to the HT, that I have to foucs my strength there.

i hear ya on the battles.....im also a very STRONG SUPPORTER that children should be raised around a dog.
it allows them to develop compassion and feelings of taking care of another 'life' besides always being taken care of.
and its not like a fish where you feed them and walk away, a dog also recipricates the compassion you give them and its a GREAT teaching tool for a child getting into their emotions.

my 6 1/2 year old now walks the dogs with me YET he is now responsible for feeding the dogs and takes great pride in their 'health'
since he started feeding them and giving them treats/snacks instead of me & my wife he is getting so much closer to the dogs.
he wants them in his room to sleep or when he is downstairs watching tv he now pets them while watching tv.

i never had a dog until i was 16, and fell in love.....i still have her DAISY my 13 1/2 year old.
that same feeling i got from having my 1st dog will always be shared with my children.

just remember the golden rule.......put 10 pennies into a pepsi CAN and shake it when the dog does something bad (when they are 6 weeks to a year old) it worked wonders for my 2 dogs

That's awesome! I had a half Chow half Boxer before. She looked more like a Chow though. Made it to 15 years before health problems. Loved that dog to death.

im dreading the day my dogs health goes south.
she is good now....no wheesing, limping, loss of appetite etc so i thank god for that.

i dont know, when the day comes god forbid, if i would be able to bring her to the dog hospital to put her to sleep.
my wife already knows this. it tears me up just thinking about that day

actually rescued greyhounds are very used to being crated and make excellent pets in moderately sized homes. My friend has a rescued grey in his condo and it's perfect. you just have to exercise them well

I knew every owner of a pure breed would get all defensive when they read my post .

sorry guys, but most people who buy a pure bred do it because they like the way that dog looks or what they think it says about them as a person, dogs have become accessories for individuals and homes,..."this brindle mastiff will look great on our wood floors"...you guys are probably the exceptions though.

dogs were originally bred a certain way to get the most out of them for certain daily uses like corralling livestock or sniffing out or tracking game. Now it's all about the blood line and the dog's "papers", if that isn't a bit shallow then what is?

like I said though, you guys are probably the exceptions

Or it could be that they are looking for a certain temperment that they feel best suits their lifetstyle and their desires from a pet. While there are always variables in temperment from dog to dog; there are some traits that will run quite strongly within most breeds.

At the animal shelter in my city, one of the 6 in the county, there are 170 dogs that need a home. I am 100% sure that one of those dogs could fill anyone's needs when looking for a pet. There's everything from a Chow Chow mix to German Shepards.

You meet with the dogs to ensure they have to temperment that suits you and your lifestyle. Plus the cost is only the registration fees and the dogs are spayed/neutered and chipped for you.

you have a point, maybe its guilt of not allowing the greyhound to run around as thats what they are bred for

good to see all the dog lovers in here
