From the Bitts about The Keep:

Quote:
The big news today is that Vinegar Syndrome, over the weekend, sold out its entire 12,000-unit run of their just-announced 4K Limited Edition of Michael Mann’s The Keep (1983). That’s probably no surprise; the title has been a home entertainment holy grail for something like two decades. We do expect at some point that there will be a standard edition more widely available from the company.

In the meantime, Imprint Films in Australia has also just announced that they’re going to be releasing their own 4K UHD and Blu-ray edition of The Keep, though no specific street date has yet been given. The point being, in the event that you missed Vinegar Syndrome’s Limited Edition release, there should be additional chances to get your hands on the film in the months ahead.
Thanks again to cheez avenger for the heads up on that one.

Will be interesting to see the Vinegar Syndrome version compared to the Imprint Films version.

Yeah,... I would not buy either without reading a review of PQ first.

I saw it not long ago online and it looked terrible. I have to know it's good before I buy this one.

In 1989 I paid $26.99 for a P&S Laserdisc version of The Keep. That is $70 in 2024 $s. So now I get a 2.39 version that hopefully will be a superior presentation and not much more than ˝ of my original purchase price.

The online versions appear to be from a very old SD transfer. My DVD version is superior to those.

Why didn't you buy this one?

TheKeepLaserdisc.jpg

It was available in widescreen in December 1993; I still have my laserdisc copy. I also have the Via Vision DVD that was released in January 2020, and I have ordered the 4K limited edition from Vinegar Syndrome. Hopefully, that will conclude my pursuit of this movie.

I believe you will need to pick up the Australian Imprint release as well.

Only if it includes the extended TV cut in decent quality and/or it proves to be vastly superior to the VS edition.

I'm not familiar with Imprint but due to the timing, I wouldn't be surprised if they use VS's scan.

Looked at projector prices, was dismayed at how much you need to spend to get close to good 4K HDR TVs, then remembered that I wouldn't even look at projectors if they still made ultra wide TVs for those pesky scope movies that appear more distant on 16:9 screens. Maybe ultra wide TVs just didn't come out at a good time. Before UHD discs really took off (as much as possible in a streaming age) and made some of the collectors more serious.

For wider aspect displays be sure to keep an eye on the Monitor market as they get larger. The Dell U4025QW, for example, is 40” and roughly 2.37:1.

Hmm, now I’m curious what WUHD OLEDs are available.

Monitors are too small. Have to sit so close that they block tower speakers. That Dell is only 15.43 inches high. On the other hand, decently sized ultra wide TVs require the speakers to be so wide apart. But sound would probably be fine.

On the more affordable ($2500) projector side is the new Hisense C2 Ultra…

Getting some pretty positive reviews…although contrast isn’t its strongest suit, it appears to make up for it in every other area.

Well, if that isn't an incentive to place another order, I don't know what is.

Why not. We're all entitled to treat ourselves now and again.

I received my Critters box set from Arrow yesterday. I have only seen the first two films, but it was a very long time ago since I saw them. Looking forward to getting stuck into these over the next few days.
