The Academy was always kind of irrelevant but it's moreso today. I don't understand why it still exists. It's an organization made up of actors and executives and all they do is pat each other on the back every year. I don't think I've ever agreed with any of the Best Picture winners.

I think awarding Silence of the Lambs was kind of ballsy move, altough I think JFK maybe deserved the best picture more that year. But it probably was too political for that.

I haven't cared about the Oscars since the 90s, there was still some kinda vibe about it back then.

Nonsense. Read a book on Hollywood history.

Because it's an award recognized worldwide that's still watched by dozens of millions of people and professionally meaningful to those who win it.

It's an organization made up of all sorts of film artists, ranging from hairstylists and sound designers and composers to producers and directors and actors. The Oscars are respected by industry professionals precisely because they're voted by their own peers.

Doesn't that say more about you than them?

If you think winners such as The Godfather, The Apartment, Lawrence of Arabia, On the Waterfront, Casablanca, Unforgiven etc. aren't worthy then your taste in movies is an outlier and should be no metric for the justification of the existence of an institution such as the Academy.

The awards might mean something to the people in the business, but should they really mean anything to us? I don't see how they should. I think the last show I watched waz the year that No Country for Old Men and all of those were up for awards. But it was partly interesting because there were so many good choices. And I was much younger and I simple for this stuff more back then. I was wrong back then.

I can understand that they do to people in Hollywood because people tend to like to get rewards within their line of work, but I have no incentive to care now.

If I didn't see that movie with a friend, I would have walked out of that movie lickety split.
Then, there were at least four times AFTER that first time where I was debating leaving my friend behind and just escaping the histrionic nightmare.
It's one of those movies where it's so awful, I can't even sort my thoughts enough to properly state my distaste. The horrendous CGI was another destroyer of my viewing experience.
David Fincher, the one that always had a keen eye for CGI, resorted to making hideously outdated VFX that shot me out of the immersion, looking worse than it should even at time of release. SMH.

Yes. When others disagree with your personal view, it's 'nonsense' and ignorance.

Look at how many millions have stopped watching over the last 15 years. It's pretty hilarious.

Hairstylists certainly know what quality filmmaking is about. Also, all actors and directors certainly know more about movies than common folk. No actors or directors ever do anything that is low quality, nor vying for a spot at the Academy, so this makes sense.

It's not about what WON, but about what the competition was, and those that got left without nominations for any given year.
Saying that winners are the reason for disregarding someone's opinion (as your basis for argument as if it's fact) means that we cannot put into account any and all potential movies that another individual being argued against felt was better... again, based purely on opinion. Not fact.
So ultimately, I feel one can disagree with a "Best Picture" nomination (or any and all other nominations and winners) and feel that something else was more poignant and memorable that year than what was voted in by the peers who have a lot of political, personal, adversarial, and professional investment in their vote in ways that the general public give zero farts about.

I tend to watch the Best Picture nominations for the chance to see something I might like that wasn't on my viewing list/radar.
That brought me to Moonlinght, Green Book, and a few other gems that I wouldn't have watched otherwise.
But then, there's the other 6-8 Best Picture nominations that I absolutely abhor and wish I didn't suffer through. So, there's that.

As I have done with several releases given I am not a Steelbook guy, and (although Panic Room is not very elaborate) I yearn for the days when studios did nicer packaging, I think I'll probably keep my nearly worthless 3-disc DVD and swap the 4K/BD discs into that.

The trailers not included seems like an oversight. I can't think of many 4Ks from Sony except for Stand by Me and The Fifth Element (definitely music rights on the latter, which is unfortunate, because it's a peerless classic of a trailer).

The Social Network is even getting its trailers which had been missing on all Blu-ray releases.

Very odd.

If the PANIC ROOM trailers were voiced by Linda Hunt, it could be a SAG issue.

Button is a wild pile of absolute garbage. I put it up there with incoherent and astoundingly bad films like Amsterdam. I have no idea in any world or reality how Fincher went from making masterpieces to doing Panic Room and Button. It blows my mind whenever I think about it. He's literally never recovered in my eyes after Button, but he still does have some pretty good films. I happen to think Social is a bit overrated, but it's still absolutely high quality. So he's still there.

But damn Panic Room is also utter garbage. I think this was the first film where I realized sometimes this guy needs a script because holy cow was this a trash film. After the run he had it was just WOWZERS what the F happened. I could not believe it simply still can't today. Should have never given Koepp the reigns on this script. He was way out of his league, and the casting choices were shite.

I am of the era that really thinks he lost his master touch after Fight Club though. I've never seen a film since that I truly thought was on level with Seven and Fight Club. I'll always admire him for those films though. I also think Alien 3 could be awesome if they gave it some love and just cut out the shite effects and redid them with state of the art CGI plus did a director's cut. I know he could get it done if he wanted to. They gave him the money for Seven to redo some things, and it's not like Alien 3 needs that much work. It does not. Sure, it won't be perfect, but damn with amazing CGI and some recut scenes it would be absolutely pretty killer.
Panic Room is one of Finchers best! It has some of his most ingenious suspense set pieces imo. Always loved it, always will. An underrated dark thriller/horror masterpiece!
