There seems to be 4 different (image quality) versions...US Sony, UK StudioCanal, German and the Spanish disc...

My undertstanding is the UK FiM is the best but at the moment my only purchase options are the German or Spanish disc...

So how does the Spanish stack up?

(I'm referring to picture quality- do not care about extras)

It is also in the same '3 for 2' deal currently on Amz Spain along with the 'To Catch A Thief' 4K I mentioned the other day...mine arrived earlier today with a nice slipcover.

I just wanted to confirm that the Spanish disc can be viewed without any subtitles whatsoever. Another thing that made me very very happy was the fact that the initial credits are in french like the title saying Le Cinquieme Element, but as soon as the movie begins, all location text is in english, like when it moves from “Egypt 1914” to “300 Years Later”. Overall, I’m very happy I double dipped and can safely say I’m never watching my US sony 4k disc again, and that this is most likely the ultimate edition of this movie. Sixth time is the charm.

Why is the Spanish edition the ultimate edition?

There is no ultimate edition, if you want one you're gonna need to frankenstein at least two releases. Spanish edition has an encode comparable to the FiM UK one, and the "original" french title (for whatever that's worth), but lacks English subtitles and is missing most of the extras.
The only release that has all of them is the German one, but that uses the Sony master, so best would be to get the UK 4K for the movie and the German BD for the extras, and you have a "complete" edition, more or less.

I was addressing picture and sound quality. I don’t need subtitles, and like I mentioned, this was my 6th time buying this on any sort of physical media, so I have all the extras over those editions. So, if you are looking for the ultimate experience watching this movie, I believe the spanish edition will fill your needs.

Okay so if I just want the best video-audio encode then I would get the UK version? Not sure what 'FiM' stands for. Which version is it?

https://www.blu-ray.com/search/?quic...ent&section=4k

(or are all of the UK versions the same encode?)

FiM stands for Fidelity In Motion

They are regarded are the best in the business when involved in a physical release on 4K disc, encoding etc.

There is a whole thread dedicated to them over on the United Kingdom and Ireland pages and a list of the titles they have done.

I bought the SC version at Amazon when it was $21.90. Came with a slipcover in solid condition as well. Took a bit more than a week perhaps, but I can't complain. It went up in price but has now dropped again. It's even lower at $21.02 for anyone who may be interested.

It's the same disc, but good luck finding that steelbook at a reasonable price.

That's just a temp art that Amazon is using, it's the same 4K+BD release.

I've spent a few minutes comparing the UK to the Spanish (more than a few really) and I'll add this to the mix.

I don't know enough about these European discs to make any factual comments beyond my own observations. Things I note...

1. The UK transfer opens with a Studio Canal logo. The Spanish version does not.

2. Credits are in different languages.

3. Chapter markers are placed differently.

4. Played on the same OLED based system in Dolby Vision, the Spanish transfer shows greater depth, black level, saturation, and shadow detail. Some of these differences are slight but noticeable when switching between the two. I can't say if this is a related to the encode or, perhaps, the Dolby Vision grade, which is obvious different, but it's there and this Spanish transfer of this film is now my "go to" version to watch.

So, which one has the best PQ? French or UK. I didn't count Spanish because it looks no English Subs.
