I think I'll hold off on buying this release of the Gladiator in hopes that someday they will release an improved version. Based on the reviews, it's just kindof an iffy buy for me. I'll definitely be buying the Braveheart Blu tho, no question about that.

If Disney can offer replacement for a few framing errors on one of the Pirates discs, Paramount could certainly do the right thing and offer a replacement for this.

Disney offered a replacement program because the movie was framed wrong. Big difference in wrong framing of a film compared to not seeing as much detail as you would like to see.

And let's not forget Sony re-doing "The Fifth Element" after they found out an old master was used before. Hmmm, that sounds familiar.

Apparently, I am a complete moron and do not know what DNR and EE is because I thought the images looked good, especially given that they seemed to convey more detail to me and were larger in size. I guess I'm not a videophile.
Guess Im not either cuz its looks good to me too......when I pick it up tommorow Im expecting a horrible unwatchable transfer like people are making it out to be......Ill let you know!

Believe it or not people were acting this way about the Dark Knight Blu-ray and that ended up being in my top 5 demo discs.

The Fifth Element really did look beyond bad that was a no brainer. It was filled with dirt, scratches, excessive grain, etc. I really have no clue how Sony ended up releasing something like that.

Didn't know about the Gladiator glitches until now. I will not be buying this until it is fixed. Otherwise companies will just pump out poor quality blu-rays knowing that we will all double dip.

From everything I've read, it looks good but not great and definitely not what is expected of one the top 10 most anticipated Blu-ray releases, ever. The general feeling is that the old HD master from 2001 was used and DNR was applied to mask the imperfections.

I canceled my pre-order with Amazon while I wait to hear whether or not Paramount will be re-issuing the disc, sourced from a brand-new master in response to all of the outrage.

So for those who got it early...how is the slipcover?... I'm too impatient to wait until tomorrow lol. Is it embossed or just a regular style one?

It's that type of thinking that will ensure we got less than perfect blu rays.

What's your authority for that statement?

I respect your position, but I think some of you are seriously overestimating the impact a small internet community will have on the sales of this BD.

I'll be at Target at 8AM tomorrow morning (EDIT: This means today) to buy both Braveheart and Gladiator and I'll review one tomorrow and one Wednesday. 3 hour movie + loads of extras = one day of work each.

To whom it may concern,

Hi, I'm a huge fan of Paramount Pictures and was extremely excited to hear you were bringing Gladiator and Braveheart as the flagship titles to your new 'Sapphire Series' collection of Blu-Rays. In fact I was so excited that I went to Wal-Mart at midnight of the release date so I could get the Blu-Rays as soon as possible. When I got home I popped Gladiator into my Blu-Ray player and was very dismayed to find that the picture quality was extremely lacking. All of the detail was washed out - I felt that the picture quality was barely a step above an upscaled DVD. It was as if all the life had been sucked out of the film. At first I thought maybe there was something wrong with my Blu-Ray player, so I played Braveheart to see if the same thing happened. But the picture on Braveheart was GORGEOUS - very crisp and detailed. It was the opposite of Gladiator; as if new life had been breathed into the film.

So I'm wondering whether maybe I received a defective disc? I know something is wrong, because there's no way the picture is supposed to look like this. I would appreciate any light you could shed on this matter for me, and if I have in fact received a defective disc, I hope there's some way I can trade it in for a proper one.

Regards,
~

Great email. Nice to see you were able to show your discontent while still being respectful While I don't think much will come of it, every little bit helps

Glad you took the initiative to contact someone. My only recommendations would have been to add specifics (e.g., timecodes, etc.)

I would have also demanded a refund.

(P.S. Is it true that you watched both, or are you going on other people's reviews?)
