Sad. I know people are quite content on double dipping. I hate double dipping for a few reasons. 1. because I'm not loaded with cash. 2. because I think it's pointless to own a bad quality version.

As much as I want to pass on "Gladiator" on Blu-ray only for the negative reviews coming in from everywhere, I personally think I am going to bite the bullet and the reason being is that with the Best Buy promotion and the mail-in rebate for current DVD owners of it, it comes down to $7.99 for the Blu-ray. Also, if the studio does do a re-do of the disc, that will be available for free to those who have already purchased the Blu-ray version. If they do a re-do later on, say months or a year down the road, the $10 mail-in rebate may not be included with it. Personally I would think people would be buying up Gladiator now, getting the $17.99 price at Best Buy, mailing in for the $10 rebate (if they qualify) and then wait until the studio reissues a better master and get that exchanged out for free. If they don't offer a reissue with a better quality HD master, the this version of Gladiator will be the best there is to offer.

Um, says who? They could very will just re-issue it. There's nothing saying they would give original buyers a new copy for free.

True, I see what you are saying. Let me change that to say "HOPEFULLY the replacement discs would be sent out for free". With all the negative reviews over the internet, I would think damage control would be starting, if it hasn't already, by the studio to offer a fix for Gladiator fans.

Hopefully Universal recognizes the problem instead of saying something like "It is the best possible quality. We don't see anything wrong with it"

This is my e-mail that was sent to Paramount:
To Whom It May Concern, I am writing this e-mail in order to express my concern over the picture quality of the recently released Gladiator Blu-ray. Being a huge fan of the film and an avid movie collector, I was patiently waiting until this highly anticipated title was released. When it became available for rental, I immediately rented it along with your other recent release, Braveheart. Surprisingly, I found the picture quality of Braveheart to be outstanding and of reference quality, but in comparison the picture quality of Gladiator is poor. Detail is lacking and the picture looks too digital, over-sharpened, and processed. Thus, in my opinion the Gladiator Blu-ray is not worthy of the "Sapphire Series" name. Disappointingly, I did not buy Gladiator for this very reason. I have already bought Braveheart since it possesses outstanding picture quality. It would be much appreciated if something can be done to solve this problem. I would recommend that Gladiator be remastered without the use of digital noise reduction, edge enhancement, or any other digital tinkering. If that can be done, then I will be the first in line to buy it. I sincerely hope that you can solve this issue. Gladiator, one of the finest movies in the history of cinema, deserves it. Thank you for your time, xxxxxx |

A better letter (not that I'd waste my time) would be to say you read reviews regarding the EE and DNR of Gladiator, and then purchased it on release anyways as a fan of the film, and confirmed these reviews. If you're gonna write a letter to complain, you may as well be up-front. |
