Maybe this has already been discussed, if so, my apologies - I remember watching Gladiator at BB when it was looped on HD DVD last year and thought the PQ was great. Does anyone know if the transfer would be the same for this Blu version? If so, then I will go out and buy it since I did see a vast improvement versus DVD back then on HD DVD. Thanks!

Heres an example of my disappointment..

This still capture in my opinion should be beautiful.. (and dont blame it on jpg because you sure as hell know a good image doesnt look like this in jpg..)
From the very beginning of the movie.. just in the text I could tell this wasnt going to be up there in quality..

But quality in movie and quality in picture are different things so Its not bad overall.

i just picked up gladiator and braveheart from bestbuy for 38 bucks after tax. I have a dvd edition of gladiator and wish to send it in for the 10 dollar rebate, do i have to actually cut out the proof of purchase on the blu ray or can i just make a copy. Not sure if im willing to actually cut off a part of the label.

DING DING DING DING! We have a winner! I do think the crappiness of this transfer will make people think twice on Forrest Gump though, beloved as that movie is.

B is from the same source as A (HDTV), but with an edge enhancement filter called unsharp mask.

Default paramount email address?

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing this e-mail in order to express my concern over the picture quality of the recently released Gladiator Blu-ray. Being a huge fan of the film and an avid movie collector, I was patiently waiting until this highly anticipated title was released. When it became available for rental, I immediately rented it along with your other recent release, Braveheart.

Surprisingly, I found the picture quality of Braveheart to be outstanding and of reference quality, but in comparison the picture quality of Gladiator is poor. Detail is lacking and the picture looks too digital, over-sharpened, and processed. Thus, in my opinion the Gladiator Blu-ray is not worthy of the "Sapphire Series" name. Disappointingly, I did not buy Gladiator for this very reason. I have already bought Braveheart since it possesses outstanding picture quality.

It would be much appreciated if something can be done to solve this problem. I would recommend that Gladiator be remastered without the use of digital noise reduction, edge enhancement, or any other digital tinkering. If that can be done, then I will be the first in line to buy it. I sincerely hope that you can solve this issue. Gladiator, one of the finest movies in the history of cinema, deserves it.

Thank you for your time,
xxxxxx

That's because most people simply buy movies they love, and don't really care how internet forums judge picture quality.

We're an insanely small minority of the movie-buying public. I'm sure 90% of the folks buying on Amazon don't know/don't care about any issues...

I picked up both of these today at lunch. I'll be sending in the $10 rebate per movie tonight. You just can't beat 7.99 if you are a DVD owner.

People are blind buying based on the movie itself. Regret won't come until after they've seen it in motion.

I know alot of people who don't even know there is a difference in quality when it comes to dvds and BD.. HD is HD to most people unfortunately and every movie is supposed to be equal.

You really think that even 20% of the people will think it looks bad?

A popular movie getting a BD release being #1 on Amazon is no surprise. The real surprise is going to be for those people when they watch the disc.

I would think the majority of people who know about the questionable picture quality also are aware of the Best Buy deal and the mail-in rebates.

That's probably true and if they think it's nice then so be it. I'm just glad I'm not Joe Six Pack and have a technical eye for noticing flaws like this.

Sadly, I believe Ben is correct. 90+% have no idea about its missed potential. Its bigger and brighter and thats good enough for them.
