I am hoping that it is huge leaps above DVD, but not as great as more recent Blus - I could live with that until a new transfer is available.
I personally think the team took advantage of the popularity and hype of the movie and knew X amount of people would buy regardless.. Its pure laziness..

If I can locate a cheap copy of it on HD DVD at my local re-sale shop, I'll grab it to compare.....

My guess is they made an excellent transfer for Braveheart and just over-did the work on Gladiator. FWIW I see DNR on Braveheart too, it's just nowhere near as bad. The sound is excellent on this one too, maybe the best TrueHD track I've ever heard. Gladiator is one of the top 50 movies of all-time and deserved a much better blu-ray than it got.

The weird color timing of the Theatrical cut on the blu-ray comes through most clearly in close-ups of faces, which all have too much of a 'rosy' complexion to me. It can be seen here in Joaquin Phoenix's face and if you compare either of the HDTV shots to the blu-ray here of Russell Crowe's face it also is evident. And of course the DNR on the blu-ray smears the detail away, making that shot lose the grittiness it does have on the HDTV broadcast versions.

The problem with poor color timing vs. DNR/EE is of course that it doesn't get less distracting by being further removed from your screen.

Well then my apologies to all!! The goof at BB told me it was an HD DVD disk. He may have meant it was a Hidef sample looped. At any rate, if they could make a sample look that good, why couldn't they make a blu that good?????

Can and will are two completely different concepts, Squiddy. Not to mention as long as people like me who just want the movie and joe six pack who doesn't know better keep making it #1, they won't care if you guys complain.
