A direct will be on April 2nd. Sucks about no OLED at launch but expected.

As someone who is 100% docked for Switch 1, I might actually be open to playing some casual or indie games handheld from time to time now that it will be much more powerful and (more importantly) a much larger screen/controllers.

Dang, so those reports from awhile back of a launch around June were probably right.

I didn’t pay much attention. Saw the Switch 1 game slot. Is there another one for Switch 2 or are they the same format?

Not too excited about the Switch 2 as a console, but am interested in what games they will have. I wonder if those games are delayed a bit, and this is why the Direct isn't even until April?

What has Nintendo proper brought out or is working on in the last 6-8 months? Pretty sure most of the big titles released and releasing soon are all from third parties (even if they're first party IP). So the main team(S) has been cooking up stuff for a while now. The Direct in April is because it's after the 2024 last quarter earnings and doesn't need to be earlier. They said they'd revel the console before March and they did. Once it's April you'll see the massive shift.

I like the design. It looks like a good balance between derivation and innovation. I like the bigger Joy Cons, as my sasquatch hands suffered greatly while trying to use the old ones. The mouse feature that was teased is interesting. I'm guessing a new Mario Paint is coming to take advantage. It might make for some interesting new game ideas in Mario Party as well.

Regarding the 5 seconds of Mario Kart that was showed, I have to be honest, I was kind of underwhelmed by the brief footage they showed. To be a brand-new Mario Kart running on brand new hardware, I expected to be more blown away. I did read that it showed 24 karts on the track at one time, which is cool. But graphically I expected a significant step up and to me it just looks like MK8 Deluxe.

We'll have to see more for sure but I actually thought it was MK8 footage just to show it was a portable console with a screen again. I won't be sad if the graphics aren't overwhelmingly changed from 8 as I'm not sure how much more you can iterate before it becomes "realistic." Just give me more density, rock solid performance, HDR and maybe a little cool RT effects.

So no rails on the system meaning existing applications like the Splitpad Pro won't work.

There's an image on MVG's newest video that shows the top and bottom bezels are smaller but the left and right look the same. It has the two systems side by side. What he shows is actually different from the Nintendo video renders.

I’m with Dyne, there’s not much more that can be done with Mario Kart without changing the art style. It’ll probably be higher resolution (MK8D was 1080p/60), I would guess some better texture and lighting work. But beyond that it will still look like Mario Kart.

I really, REALLY hope they finally embrace HDR. Of all gaming companies, HDR was made for Nintendo.

Probably a DS/3DS situation where both go in the same port but Switch 2 cards don’t fit in Switch 1.

I'd love for them to just expand it further. Do a Switch 2 Expansion. Add more characters, more tracks, maybe more items, up the resolution and framerate even further and improve split screen framerates

Ahhhhh, good point.

Thinking about back compat. Interested to see what method they use. MVG had a very good argument a while back that it could be difficult but not impossible for them to do. That being said depending on how they do it I'm beginning to wonder if there will be any performance improvements to older titles without update patches. Which wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but certainly not ideal. I mean I'm just glad my massive library carries over as should now be the norm.

I wonder if they’ll do some sort of “reverse” season pass. Here’s Mario Kart 9 and its new features and a lot of tracks, but give us $25 and get all the other MK8 tracks too.

I’m hoping for/expecting everything Switch 1 to basically max out its existing performance targets. Anything less than that would be foolish to me.

Seems pretty clear. Because the console is further off than many thought. Based on the timing of the Direct and demos being held throughout the world (lasting through early June), this thing isn't coming out until June or July.

Dude...

We still have a VERY wide spectrum of graphical progress between what we have now and photo realism. Now, don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting the Switch 2 to literally render graphics that rival the CGI movie! But I did expect SOME degree of iteration between what we got in MK8 (a game that's already over 10 years old) and that! The Switch 2 footage looks like the exact same engine as MK8. I'm sure it'll still be fun as hell to play. I just wanted to see a bigger graphical evolution, that's all.

Haha. I guess I'm still in the was that actually a new MK game shown camp. Unless I missed something, you'd think if it was they would have said Switch 2 gameplay footage. I still think it was generic footage to just show it was a tablet and screen and the same idea as the first console so they didn't just show a slab the entire time.

I swear today was all about Nintendo punking us.

Expecting the reveal trailer to be announced the day before? Nope - shadow dropped.

Expecting the trailer to be >3 minutes and show several major games, as was the case with the original Switch? Nope - you get barely 2 minutes and it shows like 10 seconds of a single game, next Mario Kart. Not even a whiff of the next 3D Mario.

Expecting a quick turnaround, with a release in late March, or even April or May? Nope - you're not even getting more info on the software for another 3 months, with a launch no sooner than June.

Yeah, this was probably Nintendo's plan all along, but I can easily see them scrapping a more detailed trailer and giving us this nothingsburger trailer instead just to give the finger to the leakers.
