Default should you play dvds on ps3?

I kno that the ps3 can read and play dvds but is it smart to use your ps3 as a dvd player, i use it for dvds sometimes since i dont have a dvd player and really dont feel like buying one, and whenever my friend sees me use it hes like " its not good to play dvds on ur ps3, sure it can read them and all but it was made for blu ray discs,it might break", should i listen too my idiot of a friend? lol
should i save my money and buy a upconverting dvd player or is the ps3 fine..

There is no problem with playing dvds...

that only thing i could think about why your friend said that is if they are scared about burning out the laser or drive from too much usage?? I really don't know.

Short answer: nothin' wrong with playing DVDs with your PS3.

Personally, I use a recording DVD player as my primary as it uses less electricity and means less wear on my gaming machines.

No, you should not listen to your idiot of a friend.

Sounds like a rehash of the first PS2's that would burn up from playing DVD's... You know they probably learned a thing or two about that by now and fixed it.

Kick your friend straight in the noots for me, plzkthxbai.

Yeah. I got DVD's that might not come out on Blu-ray or might come out 10 years from now.

Similarly, however, not everything is worth watching.

I wouldn't waste the horsepower of a blu ray player on a dvd . Me and my roommate in Iraq would watch dvd's on our 360's and both of them stopped reading disc's. So we got a disc cleaner and it fixed his but mine wouldn't even read the disc cleaner disc. So I got an elite and only used my ps3 for blu rays after that. Another guy down the hall from me his ps3 stopped reading disc's all together also! I would just buy an dvd player for dvd's.

Unless its a non-region 1 and/or PAL disc, I play it on the PS3. For the imports I own that are not region free and NTSC, I use my older Philips DVD player.

ps3 slim is our main dvd player/blu-ray player... upconverting is more than acceptable on it.... maybe not quite as good as some standalone units... but good enough for me..
