I would like to buy some german movies which are region 2

will I be able to play them on my PS3?

If your PS3 is American, region 1 and region 0(all) DVD's.

Yes, it's american

so I would not be able to play Region 2 DVD's?

maybe an upconverting player?

The oppo DV-981HD is one of the best upconverting player out there. It can be easily made region free with a remote control code.

I brought a few movies that were in pal format only, the only way that I would get to watch these types of movies was by buying an international dvd player. This is what you will have to buy If you want to german movies. Most of the american dvd players only support NTSC format. i brought my dvd player from http://www.world-import.com they have all kinds of models to chose from.

My friend has a jap 20gb ps3. Is there any way he can watch DVDs?

Of course he can. Just Japanese DVDs.

For the others who want to use other region's DVDs: you can rip it and put it on an external drive to play it on the PS3. A lot of work though.

If you have a little fatter wallet, all Arcam DVD players will play PAL discs for you and quite beautifully might I add.
The least expensive Arcam is $1500 -- the DV-135.
