Default Shin Godzilla

According to The Digital Bits, Shin Godzilla might be coming to 4K soon from Crunchyroll and/or Toho:

https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/m...ts/042125-1430

"Our industry sources are telling us that FUNimation and/or Toho may be quietly planning a new US 4K Ultra HD release of Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi’s Shin Godzilla (2016). The film was released in 4K in Japan, but here in the States only on Blu-ray. It’s worth noting that next year is the film’s 10th anniversary."

I watched this film twice, and both times, it failed to truly draw me in and hold my interest. I have the regular bluray from Funimation, and I'm unsure if an upgrade to 4K and a third watch in such a format will be a "third time's a charm" moment for me, but good for those who have been wanting an English-friendly 4K if this turns out to be true.

I was more impressed by this than Minus One. Unfortunately, I picked up the British Blu-ray last year, but this news should make fans very happy.

I hope they do. This one satirizes hard! Most don't or care to get it. Their loss.

Awesome! I was looking at trying to track down a blu-ray copy. A 4K release would be amazing.

Hopefully the 4K is sourced from the true Japanese version of the movie with the comically large text whenever a location or character is introduced.

Funimation's Blu-Ray sucked because that was cut out, and ended up losing a chunk of the film's personality.

A much different version of a Godzilla movie than Minus One but every bit as good. I bought the Japanese 4k steelbook and it looks spectacular. Looking forward to picking up an English friendly 4k version.

I loved this movie and will buy it without hesitation if it's released. I own the 2021 blu-ray release and would happily replace it.

I’ll definitely get this. After watching through all the Godzilla movies last year, this is easily a top 3 for me.

Since the bonus features for Minus One all included subtitles, it would be pretty sweet if they did the same for all the bonus content for Shin...

I really wished Criterion would be releasing this. They did a great job recently with Biollante. I've been hard on Criterion and how they've handle Godzilla for the last few years but they finally seem to be getting things right lately. Shin would fit pretty well with Criterion's style, too.

Not sure why Toho seems allergic to HDR. Someone needs to inform them that REC709 doesn't capture all the colors of the original film.

Beyond consistency I don't see what Criterion could do that others couldn't, though. If Toho wants to, they could copy their Minus One formula, throw subs on the JP 4-disc set (hopefully for the bonuses too this time) and call it a day before releasing slimmed down versions. The 4K master and encoding on Toho's Shin 4Ks is already very good, and if anything, Criterion probably wouldn't carry over all the bonus material. Not saying Criterion wouldn't do a good 4K but anyone competent doing Shin on 4K should turn out just fine.

I'll take an English friendly 4K any day though, from anyone. Based off bits wording I don't think they really have a clue who's doing the release since they noted Toho OR FUNimation. FUNimation's releases of the Blu are OOP, so I don't think they're going to be doing this one. I feel it's gonna either be Toho or Criterion.

They just hate it, afaik every 4K they've done for a catalog title has been SDR only. I was very surprised they allowed BFI to do an HDR pass for Seven Samurai (though the improvements have been debated on that one).

Well, for one, when I buy a 4k I like having the blu ray. Toho didn't provide that with their regular releases of Minus One (only with their steelbook I think?). Criterion would. I also found their regular releases of Minus one a bit cheap, a bit amateurish (the artwork on the case and the layout). I mean, it's fine and i'm happy with it but Criterion would deliver a better product, imo, with a nice booklet and a copy of both the blu ray and the 4k disc. It would be a bit more pricey, mind you but I'd just wait for a sale. :P

I forgot Toho didn't seem to like including Blu copies, plus the Criterion wouldn't cost too much really ($25 during a sale is pretty nice right now). Generally, I just hope Criterion does them all so we get consistent, decently done releases that are both affordable and easy to obtain. Having nice packaging that doesn't take up a ton of a space is a good bonus too

There is something to consistency. For the most part Criterion has done the Toho line very well.

A recent MPAA rating seems to indicate that GKIDS acquired the rights to this and will be the ones releasing it on 4K UHD physically
