Beyond consistency I don't see what Criterion could do that others couldn't, though. If Toho wants to, they could copy their Minus One formula, throw subs on the JP 4-disc set (hopefully for the bonuses too this time) and call it a day before releasing slimmed down versions. The 4K master and encoding on Toho's Shin 4Ks is already very good, and if anything, Criterion probably wouldn't carry over all the bonus material. Not saying Criterion wouldn't do a good 4K but anyone competent doing Shin on 4K should turn out just fine.

I'll take an English friendly 4K any day though, from anyone. Based off bits wording I don't think they really have a clue who's doing the release since they noted Toho OR FUNimation. FUNimation's releases of the Blu are OOP, so I don't think they're going to be doing this one. I feel it's gonna either be Toho or Criterion.

They just hate it, afaik every 4K they've done for a catalog title has been SDR only. I was very surprised they allowed BFI to do an HDR pass for Seven Samurai (though the improvements have been debated on that one).
