Watched The Substance 4K last night and it looked fantastic. A shame there's only a pathetic 2 minute "featurette" in terms of extras, especially when there's quite a thorough 28 min making of on Mubi's own YouTube channel. Quite baffling as to why that wasn't included.

I have to restrain myself on that deal - I already have a heavily discounted subscription and I haven’t watched half of them, why would I buy them on disc?! Last year I didn’t have a sub - hadn’t heard of Mubi actually - so when the same deal came up grabbed 8, only half of which I’ve actually watched - Pleasure, Shiva Baby, and Benedetta were brilliant while Under the Silver Lake intermittently entranced and bored the shit out of me.


This time round (re-)Ordered Drive My Car (previously bought it for £7.99, immediately it went to ‘back in stock soon’ status and HMV cancelled after 6 weeks) and added Priscilla as it seems like the 4K isn’t a huge difference and I actually have seen that one.

Hoping the former actually arrives this time - its on Mubi’s own website but for £11 + ~£5-6 postage

I picked up How to Have Sex and The Settlers, both first time in the deal. I want to watch HtHS again as wasn't the biggest fan of it the first time but I'll be watching The Settlers asap as I'm a massive Mark Stanley stan.

I happened to see The Balconettes last night at the cinema and was very disappointed in it. Madman have the Australian rights so it will be interesting to see what they do with it - streaming only/DVD only/DVD & Blu Ray - remains to be seen.

So hard to say what they will do because there is no doubt the film will appeal to some viewers (ever film has its fans) but I found it a tiresome take/variation of stories we have seen over and over again. That there were only about half a dozen people in the audience is not a good sign for the appeal of the film with general audiences.

MUBI have just acquired my most anticipated film at Cannes - Lynne Ramsay's DIE, MY LOVE; starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, LaKeith Stanfield, Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte. Brilliant news, they're bound to give it a proper theatrical release and no doubt 4K and Blu-ray later on.

My second most anticipated Cannes premiere also happens to be released by MUBI - Kelly Reichardt's THE MASTERMIND; starring Josh O'Connor, Alana Haim, John Magaro, Bill Camp, Hope Davis, Gaby Hoffmann and Amanda Plummer.

Others of interest they'll be showing at Cannes include Joachim Trier's SENTIMENTAL VALUE (Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Elle Fanning), Oliver Hermanus' THE HISTORY OF SOUND (Paul Mescal, Josh O'Connor, Chris Cooper) and Akinola Davis Jr.'s MY FATHER'S SHADOW (Sopé Dirisu). Looking forward to those as well.

PS: Just noticed MUBI have UK rights to Alex Ross Perry's PAVEMENTS, which is really exciting! I'm a big fan of Pavement and have wanted to see this since it was first announced. Hope it's deemed worthy of a Blu-ray later on as well, as I imagine any extras could be good.

They've got such a good lineup here - extremely excited for Sentimental Value.

Do we know if anyone has scooped the rights to Urchin yet? Could see MUBI being very interested in Dickinson's debut given the cultural buzz surrounding him.

Not yet, but I'm sure we'll hear soon.

Wondering if MUBI might pick up Mendonça's THE SECRET AGENT and/or Simón's ROMERÍA, as they previously released both filmmakers' last films. Especially keen to see the former, as Mendonça is perhaps the most confident Brazilian filmmaker working today.

Other titles I could see them going for - unless they've already been pre-sold to distributors of course - Ducournau's ALPHA, Bi's RESURRECTION, Panahi's IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT, Pálmason's THE LOVE THAT REMAINS, and the Dardenne's THE YOUNG MOTHER'S HOME (though I imagine at least a couple of those might go to other distributors such as StudioCanal, Curzon, Picturehouse, New Wave Films, Modern Films etc).

It Was Just an Accident & The Love That Remains have already been picked up by Madman in Australia and Romeria by Palace so it is pretty likely that someone already has the UK rights.

Some films get picked up without any fanfare. I'm only aware of the Australian distribution rights because they are playing at the upcoming Sydney Film Festival and have the distributor listed on their website and the paper program.

The Secret Agent for example doesn't have an Australian distributor, at least at the time that the program was printed and they may have changed since.

Given what MUBI paid for Die, My Love I can understand the publicity. Rumour has it that Netflix was also trying to acquire the Lynne Ramsey film. Thank goodness MUBI did because whilst they are primarily a streaming service they do care about cinema which I can't say about Netflix who seem to be on a mission to destroy it.

(Just wish MUBI would release The Delinquents, Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World and other films on Blu Ray).

Thus far, the only Cannes Competition titles picked ups for the UK are MUBI's quartet mentioned earlier, Wes Anderson's Phonecian Scheme is with Universal worldwide, and Julia Ducournau's Alpha was pre-sold to Curzon.
