Man...They left that Garrett Wang footage in the main doc, just as I mentioned last month....Was hoping they would take feedback on that and make it a special feature, because it's really jarring to cut away so often to such, frankly, boring footage.

That said, I agree. Seeing Jeri Taylor give an on-screen interview when she rarely ever gave one was such a treat.

I don't know for sure, but, my impression is that there could be further changes between now and the official release.

Please don't quote me on that. Treat that as pure speculation on my part.

Overall, it's a charming look at a show which, much like DS9, has grown in esteem since the streaming era began, but, in my humble opinion, this doc, as it currently stands, is nowhere near in the same ballpark as What We Left Behind. It's definitely a little rough in spots. Hopefully they can tighten it up a little bit before official release.

All footage, with the exception of some CG beauty shots recreations... it's all presented in window boxed, very obviously upscaled footage. Very disappointing about the projects lack of transparency in this.
This is shocking. It was the main draw for me. What on Earth has gone wrong here?

I'm not well-versed in video production or editing, so, please take this as intended. It's just a question, nothing more. I'm not saying anything accusatory, I'm simply wondering.

For those here with the proper experience: Is it possible that AI was involved in the presentation of this upscaled footage?

Honestly the footage from the episodes didn't even look upscaled to me. Looked like typically 90s era SD Video.

That's amazing...great news, as the campaign didn't list a digital copy as a perk for the mug. Always felt it should have been given based on the contribution level, so, I'm glad to see that was handled correctly.

Curious to hear your thoughts.

I'm sorry, folks...I don't mean to be a killjoy here, but, I have to get this off my chest.

I don't want to harp on this, but, the Garrett Wang footage makes it extremely obvious that they padded the runtime out because they hit a stretch goal and felt obligated to hit the time they promised.

As for the HD footage, I have no idea what happened here.

That was a main draw for a lot of backers, myself included, and the HD screenshot provided a couple of years ago as an example of what to expect from the finish project was miles beyond what we got. There's no excuse for the team to not have been more transparent here. If they couldn't make the HD stretch goal happen, they should have said so as soon as they knew.

Yes, the hallmarks of AI upscaling is evident. It's not egregious, but is obvious.

Yep, and another one of the stretch goals, the licensing of Jerry Goldsmith's theme song, was also not fulfilled. Considering the film makers raised $1.2m, I'm not sure where the money went. I've seen YouTube documentaries with higher production values.

I think the early backers screening didn't include any remastered extracts on purpose. They are saving the whole thing for the DVD/Bluray release. So far I only saw few shots ( Voyger's crash and opening credits few seconds)

Have you heard any comments to that effect, or, is that speculation on your part?

Did they ever at any point since the crowdfunding closed comment on the HD footage remaster situation? as I remember the DS9 documentary had fairly regular updates with sneak peeks of the newely remastered footage but I don't remember anything similar for the Voyager documentary outside of a remastered CGI sequence.

Also, worth pointing out that the stretch goal list disclaimer said this at the bottom...

Quote:
Goals 8-10 (HD footage remaster) represent the creative intent of the production team, and require the permission and support of VicomCBS. We are in active conversation with ViacomCBS with specific details still pending. The production team will in good faith attempt to complete the goals as described. In the event that goals 8-10 cannot be completed, funds obtained will be invested in other aspects of the production.
I am going to assume ViacomCBS did not play ball for whatever reason and wouldn't grant them access to the negatives so they instead used the money elsewhere hence its absence from the documentary.

I absolutely do recall this disclaimer, however, as I said in my prior post, you would think, given the success of What We Leave Behind, as a whole, and with the HD remastered footage being such a big hit, in particular, I find it difficult to fathom what reason Paramount would have had not to have been co-operative here.

I realize that the team were not obligated to continue to provide updates on that aspect of the production, but, I still maintain that they should have been more transparent about it. They were well aware that this particular campaign goal was smashed based upon the excitement around said DS9 footage in their prior doc and, fair or not, that there was an expectation set amongst the fanbase, which...let's be clear, the producers definitely capitalized on to fund this project. That's not meant as a negative, either. They absolutely should have done, and, I'm sure they made every effort, in good faith, to make this happen. All I'm saying is that they should have been a little more forthcoming.

100% agree and who knows perhaps the remastering is still underway and they released the current version just to get it out there and the eventual Blu-ray will actually include it, would be nice to get a official statement either way explaining why they couldn't remaster and where the money went instead.

Regarding remastered (not upscaled, or recreated CGI) footage from the series:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/voyd...2907067487772/

At some point (post 2020?) CBS decided in their infinite wisdom to SHUTDOWN the department of CBS Digital responsible for rescanning and remastering film, even going so far as to scrap the film scanners. So that's why the VOY Doc couldn't do any remastered video, though I did get the sense that unlike the DS9 Doc, CBS wasn't really willing to play ball this time. Not sure if anything has changed with upper management over there, but something certainly has changed....

So now, if they ever do decide to remaster DS9/VOY, they'll have to outsource it, and we know how well that worked for the remastered TNG Season 2 with HTV Illuminate.

But really, who knows how long they'll even bother keeping the film reels in storage at this rate.

Really is shocking and crazy the place we are in a decade on from the amazing work they performed on TNG Remaster, to shut the department and lose the ability to scan the negatives is utter madness but guess they figure AI is getting to the point where why bother with all that work when it won’t be long before the same results can be had for a fraction of the cost 😞
