I would disagree completely that "real human beings" alone make for greater emotional depth than animation. Animation is a beautiful medium. It has as much capacity to feel real as live-action does to feel fake. William Goldman himself said that Bambi was more realistic than The Deer Hunter.

I also didn't find the remake placed significantly greater emphasis on life's challenges compared to the original. I appreciated the performances of the Hawaiian cast, and the adjusted resolution for Nani (even if it's possible thanks to a very convenient family friend), but the original is still the film that introduced the cast and custody battle to begin with.
