These really are premium conversions now. They've been getting steadily better - the last two I've bought, this and Carnival of Souls, have been tremendous. I'm lukewarm on the film itself. It has its charms, but Rod Serling would have snorted his coffee reading this stuff. The women are lovely. The monster is a hoot. The 3D space effects are crazy good.

Stellar work from Andrew and EYEPOP. I have to say, though, that I'm not surprised it didn't do as well as previous Kickstarter titles. It's a pretty obscure low-budget sci-fi film. I'd only vaguely heard of it before, and I love sci-fi. Without a big name above the title, these vintage conversions are always going to struggle, IMO.

As all of the Kickstarter rewards have now shipped (well apart from 2 who haven't provided shipping details) we'll be making the remaining stock available online shortly.

I'm thinking of doing a launch video and part of which will be discussing EYEPOP and our recent announcement of dropping the Premium releases/Kickstarters - or at least pausing them for the foreseeable future. If you have any questions about this or our Plan-D releases, or in fact anything relevant do feel free to drop me an email and I'll try to respond in the video. andrew@dvstudios.uk

Or if you have any comments/feedback on ANY of our films you'd like me to read out/share do get in touch.

Default Better Conversions

A real fun campy watch. Have to admit that the conversions are constantly getting better, even on a lower budget ones like this. I must admit though, even the best conversions fail to impress me when compared to well done native filming. The reasons for this are complicated, suffice to say I had extensive visual training exercises as a child to preserve my stereoscopic vision which left me with some unique weird vision abilities. Loved this film's 60's flavor!!

We haven't heard from EYE-3D and associates in a bit. Seems they are not getting enough support. i hope we might see something added before too long.

Thanks for your comments and yes it's very difficult to compete with beautifully filmed native 3D, but I do think for a zero-budget conversion that Phantom Planet has come out looking like a million dollars! But I am biased.

It is however somewhat ironic, and frustrating, that as the conversions have got better, sales numbers have got worse.

Never fear Robert, we're still here - I'm just busy working on a "livestream" type video similar to the ones shared prior to the initial EYEPOP-3D launch and there will be news of some new Plan-D titles as well as some exclusive 3D content created just for the "livestream".

(I'm saying "livestream" but it won't actually be live, it'll be a pre-recorded "show".)

It must be frustrating to have to limit your work mostly only to films that are in public domain. There are so many other wonderful films we'd all like to see converted!!

It is incredibly so - just imagine what we could do with some of the classics, and even not so classics!

In fact our original roadmap for EYEPOP-3D was to build a following using Public Domain films then we hoped to build up a market robust enough to cover licensing of films for conversion. Sadly things haven't worked out as such, having peaked at our second release with a consistent downward trend in backers/sales since as I've covered in some depth in my blog post.

I'm fortunate that it does not have a huge impact on me, I've taken two years nearly full-time to try and get this to work but the market simply isn't there for what we're doing, it just means I'll need to revert to taking on more corporate projects and cut down the time I have to spend on conversions.

I watched this Friday with soda and gum. The 3D of course is very very good. I think I give the edge to Carnival of Souls which is the last one I saw. Some of that may be the different environments though. Aren't as many expansive shots in this one and space doesn't make for very good 3D. This is compensated for pretty well though with several strong popouts with ships and other space objects. The movie I'm not so keen on, a lot of cartoonish physics here though I suppose not any worse than say Star Wars. I'm not sure what was gained by making everyone super small. We're never told how big the planet is and they could avoided that brain **** with the Captain shrinking because of gravity. The acting was ok but left a lot to be desired. I never really felt like the astronaut was that upset, past the initial revelation, he had to stay on this planet forever, or that he was falling in love with Zetha. And of course the costumes and special effects are super cringe but I suppose decent enough for the 60s. So if you can look past these things and not take the premise too seriously it's an OK watch. I wouldn't recommend the movie though by itself. The 3D makes it worth it though. No specials on this one.

Picking apart the story in a film like this is missing the point entirely IMO. This is one of those films where you just roll with the goofiness and revel in the antiquely charming low-rent production design. For the microbudget they had, I think they did a pretty good job, and wrung every last penny out onto the screen. I love these vintage Space Babe movies. This one I even loved in 2-D.

Thank you for your feedback and very kind comments about the 3D.

As a side note the special features are on the High Frame Rate disc - we couldn't, and didn't want to, compress everything to fit on one disc, so thought it best to have the frame packed plus anaglyph version of the film on the main disc and move any bonus content to the extra disc.

The bonus features on the HFR Disc are:
  • Anatomy of a Shot - Making a Rocket come out the screen (40 minutes)
  • EYEPOP vs 1-CLICK Conversion (17 Minutes)
  • Doris 'n Dex: Something to Think About Animation (5 minutes)
  • Plan-D Promo (3 Minutes)

I'm good with critiquing the story. It is a review after all.

Thanks. I probably wold have gotten that then as those sound interesting, but I didn't know there was the difference, or if I read it here I forgot by the time I ordered.

And still misses the point of films like this IMO. Nonsensicalities are a feature in this case, not a bug, as they say.
