Default Artifacting in Troy: DC - It's clear this HD DVD level bitrate crap isn't working

Is it any coincidence that the artifacts appear when the bitrate is lowered to a pathetic 7.9 mbps?!??!?!? Of course not... It's a DIRECT RESULT of the bitrate being lowered to 7.9 mbps.

There's other scenes like this as well... Encoding to the lowest common denominator just really isn't cutting it any more... Especially for a 3 hour 16 minute epic. Ridiculous.

That's weird... people started saying that this is the best picture ever just yesterday... There's even a thread about it.

Looks like it's on his PS3... And it wouldn't matter because WB uses the same transfer for both.

Snail mail to Warner with a picture of the artifacting. Tell them that while it's good that they are supporting both formats, they need to maximize the encoding of the main feature to each format's strength.

It's Blu, but they use the same exact encode for both, so yes, it will exist on both versions.

Here's that thread I was talking about. I haven't totally watched the whole movie (doing so tomorrow night with some friends) so when I tested it, it was in the day time. But I still didn't say it was perfect like some other people did.

Overall the PQ is indeed superb, but still, the fact that artifacts exist, when they could easily be prevented by encoding to BD's strengths, makes me disappointed in the release.

Yeah, actually it is, otherwise I wouldn't have posted anything about it. Why are you being satisfied with a flawed release that could have been preventable by not encoding to the lowest common denominator's spec?

Well that is crap, it's like porting over a Xbox 360 game to PS3. I don't wanna start nasty stuff about Warner, because I want then on our side, but they need to start using the full potential of Blu-Ray, so that the consumer can notice the difference, between the two HD formats.

Unfortunately I think Warner is going to continue doing this until HD DVD dies its well-deserved death or Warner goes BD exclusive. All the more reason to hope for one of those outcomes as soon as possible.

Sorry didn't see your post, Plasma or LCD? I'd be really interested if that was on an LCD. (i have both and my Plasma gets riddled with it.) If you get a chance it might be worth checking out.

look, it may be the movie...but it could be the tv's capability to display all the color, IE 8, 10bit, 12bit etc.

What make/model is this set?

I only say this because I wrongly accussed The HDDVD title " 2 fast 2 furious" and it turned out to be the TV i was using at the time causing the problem. And it looked very similar to what I see here.

I say you get the time stamp post it, and have others check this with their versions on their tv's...just to make sure.

Technically a 50gb disc... with 30gb taken up...

EDIT: Actually, I take that back. This does have PCM track on it so it might be a little more than 30gb.

Default Troy

I didn't notice anything like that on my PS3 while watching it and I am pretty sensative to stuff like that. I will say that when I first got Corpse Bride on Blu Ray, I noticed something very similar to what is in your screenshot in a couple of the early scenes when watching it on my PS3. Red/Pinkish blocks. It pissed me off because I was using the HD DVD version to show off to my friends before getting a Blu Ray player, and that version didn't have any artifacts. At the time, I had decided to replace some of the HD DVDs I had with the Blu Ray versions and I noticed these artifacts on the new Blu Ray disc, but had not read about anyone else seeing them or complaining about them.

I checked my PS3 settings, and noticed my player was set to output
Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr, which I had read was better than RGB. My DLP Mitsu 65" 731 series TV seemed to display the image fine with that setting. Anyway, when I switched my PS3 to RGB instead, the artifacts dissappeard. Totally gone! I'm not saying you have anything set incorrectly, just relaying a similar experience I had with another title. Again, I watched the new Troy and didn't notice anything like that. The artificing in your screencap looks really bad. I would have been pissed if I had seen that especially since I just replaced the HD DVD theatrical version with the new Blu Ray cut. My 2 cents.....

Joe
