It will look incredible on 4K disc, don’t worry about that.

4K resolution is 8 megapixels. iPhone cameras had 8 megapixel resolution beginning with the iPhone 5 back in 2012. iPhones have been using 48 megapixel cameras since the iPhone 14 back in 2022.

High quality motion images require a lot more than just high resolution, but professional filmmakers have been using iPhones since long before 2022 for both shorts and feature films. I was just reading how the sensors and processing of iPhones were used for shooting driving scenes in F1, for example. iPhones don't have the range of lenses and other controls that a full size professional digital cine camera can provide, but with what's provided by Apple, including hardware and processing, they can absolutely provide high end professional quality motion images. And they've been used for that purposed for years now.

It seems during day shots, they look real good, but when it comes to settings with very low light, the iPhone struggles to produce detail. It happened multiple times during 28 Years Later where the grain and detail just becomes very fuzzy any time there was a dark scene happening.

This movie looked terrible. The story was a gigantic letdown. I'm sure I can blame myself for going in with such high hopes, but I haven't been this disappointed with a film in a very long time. It wasn't just me either. My girlfriend found it to be absolutely absurd, but my cousin appreciated the more "out there" elements.

Also, that was one hell of an ending ha!

This is kind of the problem with part 1 movies, movies like Star Wars, Dune, and this are like 2-3 hour trailers for the good stuff (unfortunately not for Star Wars) that comes later so it's heavily reliant on the sequels to be satisfying or otherwise it won't work. What ever happened to making movies stand on their own? I think the best ones that have worked so far were Infinity War and Wicked, so we'll see if the sequels are any good. Modern films are a mess, everything is all about excess in content now where you're required to watch every movie or show part of a franchise that comes out or you'll be lost. The constant amount of overlong movies filled with easter eggs, references to future movies, after credits, post credits that require you to watch the next movies to fully grasp, but it's really just nothing substantive or meaningful.

28 Years Later stands on its own in a nice way. There's a small setup for the sequel but it's like with The Matrix: there might be a sequel but if there won't be, the movie still works as a standalone story.

---

Boyle said they used many different cameras so the whole thing wasn't shot exclusively on an iPhone.

It'll 100% get a sequel, part 2 was shot back-to-back and is already set to release in January next year. The only thing that we don't know for sure is if it'll get the planned part 3.

While I agree it will probably not look great, surely iPhone 15 takes quite a bit better quality video than the iPhone 7s used for Unsane and not just "slightly"? It's also a much more expensive production, so I'm sure the lenses they attached, etc. also help.

But, of course, if the film was to look good then why use an iPhone in the first place.. Sure, the lightness of the equipment is an advantage, but just as important is that the the picture quality doesn't look very good aka it gets points for its rough style!

It's because of location scouting reasons, the iPhone is easier to carry around and Boyle also wanted to experiment with something different anyways. The film is all around chaotic full of tonal shifts and strange abstract editing choices, 20 iPhones used on a bullet time rig is all part of creating something weird and out there.

The sequel is already completed, it comes out in January. The bigger question is whether the box office for these two will allow them to make the 3rd film, that will complete the trilogy.

The budgets were:

28 Years Later - $74 million gross
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple - $63 million gross.

Those are big budget for films like these. Hopefully, they gross enough to greenlight the final film.

Since they were shot back-to-back, they were effectively one production, and the reported total net budget was $110 million.

The movies were shot in England. In exchange for the amazing subsidies there, you have to accurately report individual budgets for films, which is stunningly rare. It's how the colossal $600 million cost of Andor got out in the world.

The public records of the budgets for the two films are here:

I just respectfully couldn't disagree with that more strongly. This movie is effectively a pilot episode. It sets up a bunch of conflicts, but doesn't give them any resolution. Only one major plot strand is resolved:

-
[Show spoiler]the boy and his mother
- resolved

-
[Show spoiler]the boy and his father
- clearly unresolved
-
[Show spoiler]the uninfected baby of the infected mother
- unresolved
-
[Show spoiler]the villain from the cold open, who reappears at the end
- barely started
-
[Show spoiler]Ralph Fiennes's character
- unresolved, and
[Show spoiler]based on the title of film 2, he'll be a huge part of it

-
[Show spoiler]the conflict with Alpha
- unresolved, and
[Show spoiler]since the baby was brought back to the island, it's clearly going to just get bigger

I wish I had known going in that this is just 1/3 of a 6-hour movie, like the first episode of Kevin Costner's Horizon. It would have helped me process the movie as I was watching it.

I was expecting a standalone feature film, and I don't think that's what this is, in any way. Not a bad thing, just a very surprising thing.

movie talk below-spoilers

[Show spoiler]Saw it tonight and really liked it. It felt like a logical and organic expansion of what came before without being a rehash. "Boots" gave me chills. Very touching in the 2nd half (I'm not crying, you're crying!). The kid did a fantastic job, as did Mom. Surprised by the Zombie birth scene. The bromance between Dr. Kelton and "Samuel" was also unexpected (I could see these two playing video games together if we can ever get the lights back on).

The last scene, while tonally jarring--almost like it came from a completely different movie--somehow still worked for me, at that point I needed a laugh. Loved the Teletubbies themed track suits! Ha ha. Can't wait to see where they go with this. I'd love for them to drop the "Bone Temple" and just call the next one 28 Seconds Later.

Stunning from start to finish. I'd get a copy day one but I wanna wait and see a full set of the trilogy (or the two films). This is really incredible stuff and as someone who worships the throne of the original ever since I was 10 years old, this a more than worthy successor. And yes, count me in part of the crowd that teared up during that part.

One thing that people forget about Sony is that they have a very lucrative deal with Netflix, and those streaming residuals turned a lot of their recent "barely broke even" movies into hits. Stuff like Thanksgiving, No Hard Feelings, Gran Turismo, A Man Called Otto.

The high budgets will likely prevent these from being traditional hits, but they will no doubt be profitable for Sony in the long run.

Yep, and I'm sure that'll factor into the greenlight decision for Episode 3. Fingers crossed.
