Snyder made the choice on killing Zod, but IIRC Jonathan Kent's hesitancy and cautious advice to Clark - about not outting himself due to perhaps not being ready as a minor for the world's reaction - comes from Nolan and Goyer's story and Goyer's script. I get why it bothers some, but I always liked the take for this particular film, as it comes from the same place as to why we don't recruit 12-year-olds as soldiers even if doing so would possibly help protect the lives of some people.

In any case, I love the film, and have so for a dozen years now. Jonathan's death is awkward, partly because having Cavill play a 17-year-old Clark doesn't quite work, and partly because the way it plays out. I think if you had a younger actor of the right age in that scene would have helped sell why Jonathan holds on to his view of Clark not being ready, which their argument right before is meant to convey. I probably would have also tweaked the crowd to be even larger to sell the idea that if Clark saved his dad supernaturally at that moment it would be a secret that couldn't be kept. This moment aside there's very little else I'd change about the film. I'd also drop the kiss between Clark and Lois before the confrontation with Zod. It's an attempt to lighten the mood and be cathartic, but it comes across as too casual and obtuse to the circumstances around them at that point.

Those moments aside - which I don't hate, but rather feel are a few steps down from the rest - it's a movie I adore.

Anyway, I just find it kinda funny looking back at over 10 years of controversy that started with Man of Steel.

I don't have a problem with "maybe" because I get his point. You let people know who you are and everyone and their mother is in danger.

S25's Jor-El was a mistake. Flat-out.

Killing Zod. See, here's the problem - we go to the movies the nanosecond they're released, but for MoS, we had a cascade of obligations and couldn't make it that weekend (incl. Thursday). So Saturday we're at a family party and my brother-in-law says "Superman kills Zod". I was furious. Who spoils a movie the weekend it's released? I was so pissed that I didn't bother seeing it. So, my thought about Zod is simply that my exposure to it was tainted. THAT said, I get it. I still teeter with whether I agree with it, but I get it.

Ultraman - we don't know what his fate is yet. Quite frankly, I don't care.

Question: the thing about JorEL and Ultraman, is that from Gunn’s Superman? I haven’t seen that yet (and have been avoiding that thread till I do)?

Yeah, it's from the new movie although not quite as simple and clear-cut as it's been made out to be in the post you saw. So if it makes you feel better about being spoiled, you're missing the context, particularly for the Ultraman part.

You know what else does a soul good? Not voting "Do not recommend" on movies you haven't seen.

I'd agree with that, but I'm also glad they skipped doing the origin again.

Bitterly disappointed when I left the cinema after watching MOS. But since then we've had JL and BvS, so perhaps MOS isn't so bad after all.

I don't need to see a movie to not recommend it. That's the beauty of the poll over a 'star' poll. I don't recommend the movie because Gunn directed it and IMO was the start of the ruin over at Marvel. It's not a critique of the movie.

Welcome back.

That sucks it was spoiled for you. I don't get so upset about spoilers, but the S25 ones seem to be flying in this thread already...

I never had an issue with Superman killing Zod in MoS. Gotta look at the context. Superman gave Zod multiple opportunities to stop. Zod answered that he would never stop, and would purposely do nothing but cause pain and death. There is no known prison to contain him. He's essentially an active shooter in a world without the ability to incarcerate him, and only one police officer has any weapons capable of stopping him. In that context it's an all-time easy choice: take that MF-er out. The film knows that comes at a personal cost to that one capable officer and sits in that for a moment. Lois' comforting of Clark in that moment works in its cathartic purpose so much better than their earlier awkward kiss and joke exchange does, BTW.

Man of Steel is excellent. It had such a unique and relatable way to approach the character. I often see a misconception that the character is dark, which is not the case. The hopeful character was thrusted into a cinematically dark world that mirrored our own... and it was applied to his obstacles and journey to become the beacon of hope we all know and love.

That's just something that is decided in the writing. In the new Superman, they don't have a hard time figuring out a way to contain him, right?

Obviously. It's the context of the world they set up for this telling of the story. One can like it or dislike it, but the choice Clark makes to stop Zod tracks in context with it.

I haven't seen S25, so I can't comment on it.

Never had a problem with Supes killing Zod, the destruction porn of Metropolis or "Martha" from BvS like some people do. I just don't like the movies as a whole.
