I just picked up She-Devil (guilty pleasure), and was wondering are all of Olive's releases bare bones, or did they just not care to add anything to this Blu-ray? You got to think, there has to be some outtakes out there, or deleted scenes, something??

For the most part though, they would only port existing DVD extras, but even that wasn't a guarantee. For example, titles like Uptown Girls, Antitrust, Heartbreakers, Saved, etc all had the extras from their MGM DVDs. Meanwhile, none of the extras from MGM's Thrashin' DVD made it to blu-ray. MGM's She-Devil DVD was barebones, and thus so was the blu-ray. |

What do people think of Summer and Smoke? Lesser but worthwhile Williams adaptation?
Tempted to grab the Blu-ray during a future sale, but this seems prime for a Kino re-release. |

Peter Glenville is a very underrated and largely forgotten director (his adaptation of Graham Greene's THE COMEDIANS is superb!). The Olive Blu is nothing special, but it doesn't look bad at all and outside of adding maybe a commentary and a trailer, I doubt KINO would offer a really significant upgrade. For what it's worth, I recommend it! |

Thank you for the response...I figured you'd be the one person I could depend on for some musings on this.
Your summation is pretty aligned to what I've read about it; not top-tier Williams, but perfectly digestible. The cast certainly lacks sparkle, but Geraldine Page (who originated the role on stage a decade prior) is always sufficient enough, and is a certified Williams alum a la Brando, Newman, Taylor and Magnani. I always find myself inexorably drawn to Williams' universe once summertime rolls around. I paired The Long Hot Summer (which is so Williams I refuse to separate it from his work) with Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and some bourbon one sweltering night last August and can't wait to do a repeat (I'm in the south too, so while seasonal viewing sucks the rest of the year, it hits the sweet spot during these months.) Kino would simply offer a Blu-ray I could get for $10 in a future sale. Might rent it via YouTube tonight, then get it down the line. Speaking of Page and this specific brand of unhinged, neurotic southern-fried drama, I've also been meaning to see Toys in the Attic, which has been MIA on disc. |
