Colorizing B&W classics should be considered a Federal Crime!

That is interesting. I went by my local Best Buy on Thursday and they didn't have it.

This reminds me of when my dad brought home a colorized VHS version of It's A Wonderful Life. Even at a fairly young age I was mortified.

Hell No.

The reason I would not buy a Black and White version of any movie that was colourized.

This is kind of a stupid thread because I truly belive that Blu ray is a format for video purists.

I've never seen the movie, but in comparison, The Three Stooges are funnier in Black & White than in color.

I've seen the colorized Casablanca. It's really really really bad. It looked like someone used crayola crayons to do the colors. The flesh tones look absolutely cartoon like and there were points where the colorization did not go along during fade ins and outs, so scene transitions still had the B&W look to them.

My answer would be a resounding NO! Casablanca is one of my favorite films of all time.

You really wanna see this in HD?

OP here...

I asked the question because I placed an order for the
new movie-only Blu-ray of Casablanca from BestBuy.
(just $10 after I used my gift cards)

....then I went through my cabinet and found Casablanca
in several old formats:

VHS, recorded from broadcast TV in 1986.
LaserDisc, purchased in Japan in 1991 or 1992(with Japanese hardsubs)
DVD, purchased a few years ago

then at the bottom of the pile, I found a Beta tape with colorized Casablanca on it... recorded from TV in the late 1980s..... my old 20-year-old Beta VCR still plays. However, it's unable to fast forward/reverse, so I used a cordless drill and rewound the Beta tape. I played it back.... the picture quality was decent.... but I was used to the B&W version, obviously. My niece, who had never seen Casablanca, watched it with me. She said "that's it? kind of lame.... but okay for old people like you, right?" needless to say, I took her out of my will the next day.... she's only 25, so I don't know what would have happened if she watched the B&W original version instead of the color-puking color version that I had recorded more than 20 years ago....

Even when I was 25, I wouldn’t have said something like that about a classic film. When I was a teenager in the 1980s and saw it for the first time, I thought it was a great film. It actually makes me sad to think that a lot of younger people wouldn’t enjoy a good film just because it’s an older one.

They should take the money used to colorize b&w movies and use it to preserve old Technicolor movies.

Your nieces reaction is the result of the current generation being inundated with CGI fests and faced paced action flicks with no story. *Sigh*...I'm 18 and I LOVE Casablanca and other black and white classics, too bad others my age can't. If somethings old it's considered "boring" or "stupid".

she actually likes old films.... but I probably ruined Casablanca for her by letting her watch the colorized version first....

This , I think sums it all up!!!!

Would anyone even THINK of the Marx Bros Box( if and when it comes out in Blu-ray) in color? It's disgusting. All we know of those classics is that they
appeared in our collective memory in B&W. I mean, the actors filming them at the time saw each other in color - (of course) (unless Harpo was color blind) but A Night At The Opera in color is unthinkable.

But , it could have been....if you think about it . . .

What if --they were filmed in color? Did they even have color in the 30's?
y/n - maybe it was cost prohibitive then much the same way IMAX is today .
