Pretty silly this never got a Blu-ray release in the USA.
Btw, is it true the German BD has a lower bitrate than the other ones? I have the UK one so I wouldn't be affected but I'm curious. From what I recall, the UK BD already had a couple of very minor compression artefacts in dark scenes and the blacks looked a tad milky (raised black levels, perhaps?). |

Rewatched the movie on an LG C4 to properly judge the picture quality.
Overall a solid-looking movie but there were some negatives - black levels definitely feel raised. What should be pure black, isn't. - the artificial film grain / digital noise, whatever it may be, lurks in the darkest parts of the screen and doesn't look great. - there is one night-time landscape shot of Moscow that's got some serious colour banding going on. Noticeably uglier than the rest of the movie. I guess if the website ever reviewed the Blu-ray, it would get, I dunno, 4/5 for picture quality? Google tells me that, despite utilising a 2k digital intermediate, the movie was shot on a Red Dragon camera, using the Recode RAW 5k format. So maybe, one day, the movie could receive a native 4k BD? Would be nice. |

I very much doubt the rushes/RAW files have been archived. But even if they did Lionsgate aren't going to spend a huge amount of money rebuilding a low budget indie comedy film (that they inherited from the eOne fire sale) from scratch so they can release it on a disc format that's underperforming in the country that made it. It's a 2K film and will stay as such.

Not rebuilt from scratch though. I mean basically nobody is rebuilding 2K-finished films from their rushes in order to reversion to 4K - it isn't really a thing. Happens with SD-to-HD TV shows of course but film is a different beast. There are no doubt exceptions (isn't Panic Room one of them?), but they are unicorns.

Any rumours about maybe Criterion picking this up? It’s such a brilliant, shockingly comical and accurate (where not in details then in spirit) film, as I am becoming more aware of with each viewing.

None other than it’s an outstandingly good, critically acclaimed, culturally relevant picture with an A list cast that has yet seen only lackluster releases on disc. It has happened in the past that such seeming neglect was due to a release from Criterion being in the pipeline, which usually does take its time.
Not saying that this is a fact in this case, therefore I was asking. Last edited by Ebab; 08-25-2025 at 10:43 PM. |
